Any place with sand, water and a soft breeze. That's all I need.

How about you? Are you more of a beachy person or a mountain wilderness type?

Kauai, Hawaii
There is not a more beautiful place on earth.  The weather is perfect.  The island has many things to do, snorkeling, whale watching, golf, Waimea Canyon, and so much more.
I can't wait to go back!!!

My trip to Italy.  I was on a tour.  My travel companion had to cancel at the last minute and I decided to go it alone.  I was very well treated by my travel group and they included me in everything so I was never alone unless I chose to be.  We landed in Milan, went up to Lugano in Switzerland (amazingly pristine), came back down to Milan.  From there we traveled to Venice, Florence, and Rome.  We stopped at many cities along the way.  The country, people of the regions and the food was outstanding.  My favorite city was Florence.  It was the most magical of all the vacations I have taken.  I can say that because although I have gone to many areas in Europe, the USA, Mexico, the Carribbean, Canada as well as other places I had the best time in Italy.  I highly recommend a trip there.

Martha's Vineyard! My Sister treated me to this trip and we were right on the ocean! Beautiful water and sunsets, and so relaxing. The food on The Vineyard is excellent and so isthe shopping! I would recommend it to anyone who loves the ocean and natural settings.

Since I can no longer travel long distances, I stay close to home.  Luckily, Oregon is my home, there are many diverse types of vacation places from the coast to much dryer central and eastern Oregon.  However, the Oregon coast is my favorite place to go most anytime of the year.  One of my sisters and I use her time share or rent homes at whichever beach we are going too, from the smooth walking beaches of Cannon Beach or Manzanita to the cliff hugging condos at  Depoe Bay where the spray from crashing waves just  may get  you a bit wet on a blustery day, and if you're there at the right time of year, you can see whales swimming , feeding, breaching in ocean right  off the deck.  Kauai is a wonderful place to vacation too, the scenery and beaches are spectacular.  Stanley Park in Vacouver BC., is a fun place to visit with the family - which our family did several times years ago.  Joanne Durkin, Beavercreek, Oregon

Our best vacation was flying into Great Falls, MT and renting a car. We drove to Banff and toured that area including Lake Louise--gorgeous! Then back to Glacier National Park. From there to Jackson Hole, WY and drove north visiting Grand Teton National Park (the most beautiful mountains ever) and then Yellowstone--what a fabulous national jewel! Could have spend more time in each place just enjoying the scenery and beauty. It was the "after retirement" trip I had dreamed of.

After surviving bone cancer last year, I never thought I would ever go to Europe, but having a daughter, son-in-law and grands stationed in Germany, I was blessed enough to go to Paris.  Walking out of the metro, turning the corner and seeing the Eiffle Tower took my breath away.  It was one of the most memorable sights I will ever see.

When we lived in Ft. Collins Co we felt as though we were always on vacation. Our favorite hiking spot was in Rocky Mountain National Park: Bierstatd Lake. I was quite a hike for a young family, however, going up was a beautiful vista of the other side of the valley. We always packed a hiking picnic lunch and when we reached the lake we would enjoy the picnic and then hike around the lake. A ver prestine and peaceful place. The children loved it! We truely miss it and many more hiking areas.

I am looking forward to some of the other ideas in this thread (such as national parks). But since retiring from the military three years ago, the wife and I have come to enjoy Ormond Beach (just north of Daytona) during those warm water weeks just after our nation's kids go back to school. Ocean front, ocean facing with a balcony view preferred.
