See America first. We have so many beautiful state parks all over the USA. Plan your vacation "seeing America". Boost the economy of this great nation. Keep American dollars in America.
My most memorable vacation is the one spent with family in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.

Just returned from Churo, Kenya for three weeks.  Amazing terrain, people, wild animals and I would go again!

Banff, Alberta Canada definitely tops the list--magnificent beauty surrounds you---hope I get to back again someday. Years ago went to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio--Wonderful hiking around "old man's cave"--Took so many gorgeous photographs there--canyons, cliffs, waterfalls, forests. And favorite Beach destination is Santa Rosa Beach in Florida.  Water is multiple shade of blue, sand is clean and white and beaches aren't crowded. Wish I could travel more!

You really hit the nail on the head with these two most beautiful areas (Banff, Alberta) Canada ---When you get back do see Jasper and go see Vancouver -- a beautiful city surrounded by water --- it's my favorite after San Diego CA.
Happy travels.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Third Edition), a vacation is a period of time devoted to pleasure, rest, or relaxation.

So take a Vacation in your own back yard

Check out your local visitors' center for nearby locations. Parks,  art centers, museums, tours, and so forth.
Most of us have never taken the opportunity to visit those places that would be considered a day trip or overnight stay.

Consider seminars such as cooking classes, local community college how-to classes, dinner theaters, music events.

Have a picnic or dinner party with friends.

I recently attended a relative's funeral and the pastor said something that struck a cord, a tombstone has two dates connected by a dash. We are born, we die...but what are we doing with that dash. Now is all you have, you are not promised tomorrow.

So vacation now....do something you have always wanted to do. Take that class you have always wanted to take.
Be impulsive, share yourself with your family and friends.

Our two most memorable vacations were for our 25th wedding anniversary when we went on a four-island tour of  Hawaii, including Oahu, The Big Island, Maui and Kauai (http://geoffclarke.hubpages.com/_gfc15/hub/Romantic-Getaway-to-Hawaii) and our 30th wedding anniversary when we went to Bali (http://geoffclarke.hubpages.com/_gfc15/hub/Romantic-Getaway-to-Bali)
Bali Sunset at Jimbaran Beach

I can highly recommend both destinations!

Here are some other Anniversary Vacation Ideas (http://geoffclarke.hubpages.com/_gfc15/hub/Anniversary-Vacation-Ideas)

I would like to put a spotlight on the Riviera Maya.  This could create some neat vacation memories for people who are into exploring mystical Mayan temples, ancient civilizations, hearty Mayans in the communities, relaxed atmosphere in the colonial towns, rich wildlife, colorful food, and the unique eco system of the Yucatan Peninsula.  There is so much variety: you'll find white Caribbean sand beaches and the Great Mesoamerican Barrier Reef on the east coast, as well as lagoons and cenotes (sweet water ponds and caves) inland.  From June to August you can snorkel with whale sharks at the north tip of the peninsula.  There is excellent diving and snorkeling around Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Cozumel.  In my almost 9 years here, I have seen an extraordinary growth in this area, and it's interesting to experience this blend of modern and traditional lifestyles, where sophistication meets simplicity, where high-end and sustainable tourism coexist.  The Riviera Maya is advancing in terms of accessibility as well, and wheelchair users or mobility-impaired travelers can find support at AccessEcoTours.com.

My husband took me to Rome, Venice and Paris for my 50th birthday. He said he wanted me to be on the Eiffel Tower having lunch at Jules Verne on the actual day in August 2010. I could have died and gone to heaven. If I never travel abroad again, I'll remember this trip forever.Paris is truly the city of love with Venice coming in a close second.

My favorite spots have to be Scotland and Ireland. My two sons and I spent a week in each place, and I can't even begin to tell you how much fun we had. The amazing castles, the natural scenery, and the people were so very friendly. Being of Scottish heritage, it was interesting to see where I hailed from.
We flew into Dublin, then rented a car and took off! After our week in Ireland, we took the ferry over to Scotland. We had researched our trip before we went, and had specific destinations in mind, but during our travels, we would come upon the most amazing things that weren't on our itenerary. Of course we had to stop!
Our first trip was in 2008. We loved it so much, we went back in 2009, and are going back next year!

In Response to Most memorable vacation spots : I'm driving to Banff this August.  Can you suggest the best scenic roads around Banff?

Which direction are you coming from? If you are any where near Glacier National Park in Montana may I suggest that you do the Logan Pass (West Glacier to St. Mary). Then travel north to Waterton Nation Park in Alberta and carry on north on Highway 6, 3, 22, and then Highway 1 west into Banff. There will be lots of info at the park gates as what to see and do. I also suggest travelling the Ice Field Parkway to Jasper National Park. All roads are paved. Have your camera handy and remember the Wild Life is wild and the females are protective of their young so keep your distance and use your zoom.
