My most memorable trip was 26 days via tour bus through Alaska. Started in Washington state and went through the Yukon. We appointed a spotter each day to watch for wildlife and the bus driver would stop each time so we could take pictures. We stopped in state parks for lunch fixed in the bottom of the bus, picnic style. We all became excellent friends by the end of that trip. Stopped at a different place each night, did many day tour/trips. Rode the railroad and came down the passage via cruise ship. I'll never forget the majestic beauty of Alaska

About thirteen years ago, I started riding rail-trails. My first one was the Hiawatha Trail in Idaho with it's tunnels and trestles. I was hooked. Since then, I have ridden over thirty major rail and canal trails. As a tour guide, I have traveled all over the world, numerous times. But nothing beats the scenery, serenity, exhileration and sheer pleasure of riding these national treasures.

While riding the trails you will go places you've never been before. You'll be away from the crazy crowds and truly experience your destination rather than just driving by it. You will discover mom & pop country stores, historic ghost towns, resplendent fall foliage and landscapes that will blow you away.
Shortly after I started exploring these wonderful trails, I began compiling a network of trails for other active travelers. Recently, I even added a plug-in that allows others to add their favorite trails. In a time when everything is expensive, fast-paced and overcrowded, long-distance trails provide the best vacation you've never had.Cool

China, Tibet and Russia are at the top of my list.  Going by boat  down the Danube River and visiting Prague and Budapest also rate high on my list!

Banff, Alberta Canada definitely tops the list--magnificent beauty surrounds you---hope I get to back again someday. Years ago went to Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio--Wonderful hiking around "old man's cave"--Took so many gorgeous photographs there--canyons, cliffs, waterfalls, forests. And favorite Beach destination is Santa Rosa Beach in Florida.  Water is multiple shade of blue, sand is clean and white and beaches aren't crowded. Wish I could travel more!

I'm driving to Banff this August.  Can you suggest the best scenic roads around Banff?

In this time of economic uncertainity and horrible gasoline prices I suggest staying at home, investigate what's available within driving distance and taking advantage of it. Not only will you save money you will be helping your local economy. I'm lucky. Lots of things to do within 100 miles and I live in a semi-county environment. I can imagine city folk would want to get out of the city but I bet they can find country near the confines of the city. Many of the older cities cemeteries were built as parks and had beautiful landscaping. There is a cemetary near where I live that has marvelous statuary in it also. Lots of things to see right where you are.

Lancaster, Pa. It's always nice to getaway and go back in time. You can take a buggy ride, go to stores like the Country Kitchen Kettle or just travel the roads. Don't forget to stop in at the  Dutch Haven in Ronks to pick up your Shoe Fly Pie. It's the best. Go next to the Outhouse, it's alot of fun.  Go to this site for more info http://www.padutchcountry.com/shopping/lancaster-local-shops.asp#2

Pretty much the same thing I suggested. We think alike, somewhat. In Response to Re: Most memorable vacation spots:
"Stay-cattion"   What about lodging in your own town as a tourist?  Check out all the places to go - make a plan. Maybe use public transportation to tour your City.  TSample a cafe you never go to.  Simple solution to raising cost of gas and perhaps a chance to see all those places you meant to visit but just never took the time.

Second post. If I had gobs of money and my health or some help I would like to spend a couple of weeks or more in the hotel nearest to the Smithsonian Institute and spend hours wandering about taking in the sights. I was there for a couple of hours in my youth, I think 1964, and it was the highlight of the trip to the World's Fair in NYC in my eyes. That was not enough time. I would also like to explore their storage areas too. That's the one I hold out for and why I enter so many sweepstakes.

If you want to experience the "Olde Europe", check out Portugal. The old sector of Lisbon is a treasure. The countryside is magic and the cities of Porto, Coimbra, Evora and many others are charming beyond belief.  Driving is easy as roads are well marked and the country itself is rather compact. Just don't venture to the Algarve, where many of the towns have turned into English (as in England) outposts.
