I have a seven year old daughter who loves the outdoors.  I would love to take her camping, but the issue is me.  I am allergic to every bug alive so camping isn’t that fun for me.  I am so envious of those who don’t have this issue, or do you?  What do you do to control the bug discomfort while camping?  Also, do you have recommendations for good camping grounds?

Done, I mean done, camping in a tent!  We got a 5th wheel with memory foam, furnace/ac, generator, etc.  We still enjoy being in 'the woods' but hate sleeping on the ground.   We call it 'adult camping'!

I noticed a post about camping with a wheelchair. I'm on the user board of Access Technologies Inc, which is a nonprofit partner with the State of Oregon (every state has one). It helps folks determine what assistive tech is helpful to them, and features a library of electronic, durable medical, and other assistive tech. One of the most popular things in our show me events is a "roll in" tent and various fishing and hunting accessibility devices.  (Check with your State's access board.)

In Response to Re: like camping?:
My husband and I loved camping. We camped in the New England mts. close to home and camped our way driving around the US several times. On those trips we were gone 1 or 2 months at a time. Our dogs always went everywhere with us. We used every kind of camping shelter: tent, travel trailer, motorhome, or pickup camper. We camped or traveled in every continental US state. I can tell some good stories too. How I miss that life! I tragically lost him in 2009, so sadly, that life is over. I turned 60 last month, and now my computer is my life. I would be happy to chat about camping with anyone here.

Very much like you, my husband and I, both educators, began camping in 1973.  We would take off for the entire summer, and camped in every state in the continental U.S.  After we retired, we took our dog, and took our grandchildren camping.  We would stop whenever possible to play a round of golf.  I also lost him in 2009.  But I traded in my 34' Dutch Star for a 25' Winnebago which gets 18 mpg.  Last summer I drove (with my dog) 10,000 miles.  I had my granddaughter with me for five weeks.  When camping by myself, I place my son's Marine boots outside the door to make it appear as though there are two of in there.  I also travel with my laptop, but my dog passed away in March.   It's lonely, and I would love to camp with someone.   I'd love to have your company.  We are peas in a pod.

I have been an avid camper for many years. I took all 3 of my children when they were younger (all grown now), and both my first and second wives enjoyed it.  Well, am divorced now, but my girlfriend and I are still camping! We have been checking out the state parks here in Wisconsin, and they have many beautiful campsites to choose from. One of my favorites is Peninsula State Park in Door County, which is situated on Green Bay.

Like many of the other posters on here, we are just getting too old to sleep on the ground. We'd love to trade our two tents for a camper! If anyone reading this - preferably someone in the southern Wisconsin area - owns a camper in good condition they'd like to sell for a reasonable price, we'd love to hear from you!

P.S. - to the woman who posted about being "allergic" to bugs: my girlfriend is not "allergic" to bugs, but she detests them with a passion! We spray the campsite prior to setting up, and use an outdoor fogger 1-2 times a day to spray the brush surrounding the site. This, combined with citronella candles and a screen tent allows us to enjoy a relatively "bug-free" campsite (as bug-free as you're going to get in the outdoors! :)

For you who like to go "THE EXTRA MILE" so to speak! Why not join me on a long hike? I will be camping; however, at 67. I don't know how long it will take? It's only 484-miles from France to Spain on the Historic "Camino de Santiago." I watched the movie "The Way" with Martin Scheen and that's what inspired me to take this journey.

There will be no charge for this, just the expenses along "The Way." You don't have to make the whole trip you can join us anywhere along the 484 miles. For more information, check out, my blog at "Jim's  Camino  de  Santiago."

Love to camp and enjoy the campfires and adult beverages with my summer friends.  I have camped at the same campground since 1954 with my parents at Seneca Lake, Senecaville, Ohio.  I grew up there and so have my children and grandchildren.  I would not trade my camping days for anything.  Have had lots of fun and experiences there.

I started out tent camping and have grown through the years with many trailers.  There is nothing more enjoying then to sit by a campfire and discuss all the problems of the world with your friends.  Nothing ever gets solved but we sure do have alot of fun working at it.

In Response to like camping? : I like camping.  Last major camping trip was to Mt. Washington a couple of years ago.   Next on my camping agenda is to camp on the beach at Galveston Island, or on the beach at Padre Island National Park. Of course the motorcycle stays home when camping on the beach, but at Mt. Washington, I just had to climb the mountain on my Harley.  What a great adventure!   The problem is that I've recently joined the ranks of the "Medicare Set" (by age).  I find no camping companions in my age group.  They all seem to be dead or live in retirement homes.  For the last 10 years, all my camping adventures have been solo.  Didn't used to be that way.  :-(

It sounds like you're on the east coast. Come farther west! Most of the folks in the campgrounds we've been visiting are over 50! We're going camping tomorrow with a group of folks who own the same kind of RVs, but you can find groups through Good Sam's and other camping groups. Hang in there!  Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you can't have fun. :)

Hello fellow sailor.
What exactly is your age group.? I think I am in an older age group ( splendid seventies),but I can find camping companions. I think you simply have to look harder or be more creative where you look.
I do find certain shyness about my age. I would love to canoe down Yukon River in Alaska. "No worries " on the camping part , but would I be able to keep up with the rest of the group? Would my legs cramp up kneeling in a canoe for most of the day? So, I am chickening out.  But camping is simply pitching a tent for a bedroom and inviting all outdoors to be your living room.  I even like cooking when camping!  Yes, I can bake a cake on a campfire.
