In Response to like camping?: do you like being in the mountains? do you like to go camping? want to talk camping and perhaps share a story? Posted by wendy5555 I have a seven year old daughter who loves the outdoors. I would love to take her camping, but the issue is me. I am allergic to every bug alive so camping isn’t that fun for me. I am so envious of those who don’t have this issue, or do you? What do you do to control the bug discomfort while camping? Also, do you have recommendations for good camping grounds? |

In Response to Re: like camping?: My husband and I loved camping. We camped in the New England mts. close to home and camped our way driving around the US several times. On those trips we were gone 1 or 2 months at a time. Our dogs always went everywhere with us. We used every kind of camping shelter: tent, travel trailer, motorhome, or pickup camper. We camped or traveled in every continental US state. I can tell some good stories too. How I miss that life! I tragically lost him in 2009, so sadly, that life is over. I turned 60 last month, and now my computer is my life. I would be happy to chat about camping with anyone here. Posted by pameo Very much like you, my husband and I, both educators, began camping in 1973. We would take off for the entire summer, and camped in every state in the continental U.S. After we retired, we took our dog, and took our grandchildren camping. We would stop whenever possible to play a round of golf. I also lost him in 2009. But I traded in my 34' Dutch Star for a 25' Winnebago which gets 18 mpg. Last summer I drove (with my dog) 10,000 miles. I had my granddaughter with me for five weeks. When camping by myself, I place my son's Marine boots outside the door to make it appear as though there are two of in there. I also travel with my laptop, but my dog passed away in March. It's lonely, and I would love to camp with someone. I'd love to have your company. We are peas in a pod. |

In Response to Re: like camping?: In Response to like camping? : I like camping. Last major camping trip was to Mt. Washington a couple of years ago. Next on my camping agenda is to camp on the beach at Galveston Island, or on the beach at Padre Island National Park. Of course the motorcycle stays home when camping on the beach, but at Mt. Washington, I just had to climb the mountain on my Harley. What a great adventure! The problem is that I've recently joined the ranks of the "Medicare Set" (by age). I find no camping companions in my age group. They all seem to be dead or live in retirement homes. For the last 10 years, all my camping adventures have been solo. Didn't used to be that way. :-( Posted by SailorDon01 It sounds like you're on the east coast. Come farther west! Most of the folks in the campgrounds we've been visiting are over 50! We're going camping tomorrow with a group of folks who own the same kind of RVs, but you can find groups through Good Sam's and other camping groups. Hang in there! Just because you're over 50 doesn't mean you can't have fun. :) |

I think you simply have to look harder or be more creative where you look. I do find certain shyness about my age. I would love to canoe down Yukon River in Alaska. "No worries " on the camping part , but would I be able to keep up with the rest of the group? Would my legs cramp up kneeling in a canoe for most of the day? So, I am chickening out. But camping is simply pitching a tent for a bedroom and inviting all outdoors to be your living room. I even like cooking when camping! Yes, I can bake a cake on a campfire. Another sailor Ilga |
