I'm a newbie here and I was pretty happy to find what I thought would be the perfect forum for my question. But looking through the forum, I see lots of people have viewed the questions but hardly anyone replies. Why is that? The questions seem to be very good ones. I can't think of anywhere else to go to ask my particular question (about what's the best laptop/tablet/kindle-thing for a senior who has never used a computer), but maybe I'm not finding livlier senior-oriented forums?

AARP  was very active at one time and the format changed and many people had a problem with logging on or posting.

Take a look at this Senior's site.

I don't have AARP medicare supplement health insurance. People recommend cars, grocery stores etc.
I have never heard anyone recommend their medicare supplement insurance plan.
I went through the same thing last open season. Nobody recommended any private medicare supplemental insurance carrier. A lot of us just can't afford them. I think we see them as a Catch 22.

Your question will have to be answered by you depending on what you want to be able to do with the portable device you choose.

My daughter has a Kindle. Hers is mainly for reading books she downloads.

We don't own any netbooks/tablets but my knowledge of them shows you are limited with what you can do.

My daughter and I both own laptops. I just bought her a new one for Christmas. She needed more RAM and hard drive space. I bought her a new Dell with Eight gigabytes of RAM, a second generation Intel i5 processor with 2.3 Ghz speed, dual core/four threads, and a 750 gigabyte hard drive.

Please give some information about how you plan to use what you buy.

You can also search for information about each by using your favorite search engine. Just type in kindle or tablet or laptop.

You must have some computer knowledge as you post this question.
I my self I have a laptop as I can take it with me when I travel and check email, keep intouch with friends and family, also to make hotel, car, or flight  reservation etc. You can do that also with a tablet, Ipod and smart phone. The Kindle is designed for the reading and downloading of books rather than surfing the net however, the Kindle Fire does have WiFi.
Two things that you may want to to think about are WiFi and G3 or G4 networks. WIFi ( a wireless internet connection) is free at a lot of public place while if yiou use a G3 or G4 network you will have to pay a monthly fee (phone companies) but are able to access the net where ever there is a phone signal. Laptop has  WIFi and an optical drive (able to play DVDs and CDs) Tablets can have WIFI or 3G or both while a smart phone has voice communication, texting, and internet capablities with either 3G or 4G. So as you can see the choice is yours. Hope this helps a bit.

Having been on a number of boards. I might suggest that it is typrical for more people to view than post. Not sure of the membership size here, but that is also a factor. I know you can subscribe to a thread once you know it is there. In my case Ihave been more involved in other areas on this board. Wish there was a way for someone to mark an area to watch so you could be notified if someone posts there. I know how frustrating it can be. I have been in IT for over 30 years and I was looking for an answer to a question about my Android phone, but never received a notice on the Android forum where I posted.

I think I will try to look in more areas of this board.
