87 year old looking for easy to use netbook

i am looking for an easy to use netbook or tablet. This book must be durable as I am prone to dropping things from 2-3 feet off the floor, my floors are carpeted, but my son says that an iPad is out since they break to easily and that I should look into a sturdy netbook. All I wan't to do is use facebook and use gmail. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. J

I don't have a reply for you, but I'm looking for the same thing for a friend of mine who has never used a computer before. I'm trying to figure out if a tablet, netbook, or kindle-like thing would be best. I hope someone pops in with suggestions. If I find out more, I'll repost here. I'm going to start a new thread, too. I'd be grateful if you'd post your experiences with the varous netbooks etc., and what you did and did not like. My friend loves to read and is pretty much housebound, so I wanted to get something for her that will be easy for her to rent e-books on and not too expensive for her to buy e-books on. She's also very isolated, so I want something that will allow her to easily access and use social media, especially chat forums. I want her to have easy access to Pandora as well. We two can't be the only ones looking for these answers! |

If what you really want is a web browser computer, consider a Chrome Book. It looks like a laptop with a screen and keyboard. But, all you have is a web browser (Chrome). You can get to gmail and facebook. You mght want to get a mouse too, as the trackpad takes getting used to (at best). You have to worry about how it will be connected to the internet: plugged into a router, wifi, or 3G/4G. If you have a WiFi router you can move about the house with it. Durability, I don't know. The Samsung I have seems a lot more sturdy than the iPad, but I have not dropped either. It really depends on your sight and dexterity. If your eyesight is bad you need something larger and/or brighter and/or crisper. Most browsers magnify when you type ctll and + (push down the control key and tap + -- don't bother with shift) and unmagnify with ctrl and -. On Apples use the command key rather than control. Before you buy make sure it works for you in the right light conditions. A well lit store is different from a sunny day. I have a kindle and it works wonderful outside in the sun -- little glare. Typing on a smart phone is really hard for small phones. It gets better but hard on a tablet. A real keyboard is best. The keyboard on the chromebook may be to small and you might want an external keyboard -- you can buy something that works best for you.

J Posted by jeanhawkins23 That is a difficult request to meet since so much of this technology has weak points whether it be the screen or the hard drive. An Ulta book could help you with the drive if it has an SSD instead of a hard drive since there are not moving parts in an SSD as there is with a hard drive. The problem is that it drives up the cost. Ignoring part of what you requested I can tell you about a netbook I bought my wife. I was considering a tablet or an IPAD but she had no desire for anything but a wifi connection. I came across a netbook at Costco which was only 349 and it included a 500gb hard drive and 4 gb of memory. Its size is not much more than a tablet and it has a lot more power. She is delighted with it. It does not have a cd/dvd drive but it has a usb port so you can use flash drives to copy files. Some netebooks go down to 10 inches but of all those I saw, they only had 2 gb of memory and it was not a full version of Windows 7. My wife has commenyed many times how much she likes it, Her main reason for wanting it was to set up her recipes on a system which she could take into the kitchen and use there. Even if I got her a tablet, she would want a holder so it would not lie flat and an optional keyboard to enter a lot of informmation. One of the benefits of Costco is they extend the warranties of theit pc's. |
