I just finished reading yet another article(in AARP)about how pets are good for elderly folks.Yes,I agree, they are,but for anyone on a fixed income,it can be a real problem if your pet needs a vet visit. It isn't cheap, believe me!Many pets will not get medical care ifthey need it,and many pets will be given away,or show up at the local pound as an owner surrender. So please, next time you tell people to get a pet, remind them of the cost of caring for one.

You make a good point. I have a friend who posts on Facebook about various dogs for the Great Pyrenees rescue group she supports. The last one was a very sad looking animal (probably weighed over 150lbs) who was being surrendered because the owner was entering a nursing home. Breaks my heart for both of them.

I am not for the elderly having pets unless they have willing, responsible family members, known and loved by the pet itself, to take in that animal if the elderly person should become ill or pass on. Articles that talk about pets as if they were objects, rather than sentient beings, are not helpful IMO. The dog I have now will be my last. He is 15 and needs special care. I will not get another as my health is failing and I have no family who would be willing, or who have the common sense, to care for my pet if I should pass on. Yet I have a friend, older than I, who will always have a pet because her family is capable and willing to take in her animal if the need should arise. All circumstances are different but people should realize that animals have feelings too and should not be discarded when no longer needed or convenient.

You are correct that pets need caretakers, if their owner should become ill or disabled. And, there are many pets who have long lives, and may need care for many years. Parrots have rescuers, and there are parrots that need adoption, too.
