omgoodness yes.    My most treasured pet, Flame, an irish setter, i put down in 1998.    I loved that dog so; she had her own vocabulary of sounds.    13yrs later, i still miss her.    a pet is part of your family and can be grieved as long as it takes.

You grieve thier loss but in a different way than you would a relative. I lost my brother, mother, sister, and father years ago and my wife and i have no grandchildren or children. Our pets filled that void. We had many pets over the years, mostly dogs but moreso cats and all have been just like family. As long as you treat them well and know they had a good life you have done your job. one thing you can do is to try and find another pet to lighten the sorrow of the ones lost. It helps.

Our cat "Boomer" was 21 when we had to put him down because he had an inoperable tumor in his nasal passage. He was in a lot of pain and it was a tough decision. He was a rescue cat that we had acquired 9 years before. My wife held him on her lap as the vet put him to res (by injection)t. We decided to bury him in our back yard. We both cried as we placed him in the ground and buried him. Last week we acquired another rescue cat, a 4 year old domestic shorthair. He will be a playmate to our other cat Tigress.
Response to Can You Grieve the Death of a Pet as Much as the Death of a Relative or Friend?:
In a post from late March, AARP health blogger Candy Sagon discusses the levels of grief one can feel over losing a pet compared to losing a relative or friend. She was inspired to write about the subject after reading a touching article by a Washington Post editor who was overcome with grief after the death of his Doberman . For many folks, pets are like family members and their deaths can be every bit as much devastating and emotional. When my cocker spaniel Bogey passed away, I was sad for a couple of weeks. But Bogey was 13 years old and had lived a good life ... and somehow it was comforting for me to know that his badly arthritic joints were no longer causing him pain. I have nothing but warm and wonderful memories of Bogey, and I still often think of him all these years later. (My current living conditions are not conducive to pet ownership, but one day when I retire, I hope to get another black cocker spaniel just like Bogey.) What do you think? Is it normal to grieve the loss of a pet the same as the death of a human loved one?

Absolutely.

I miss my human friends and relatives dearly, but I also miss my beloved pets, too.

I have grieved differently for each cat that I have lost in my life, as I think that they each filled a different need for me, and they all each had different needs that they needed taking care of, too.

The most recent one that we lost almost two years ago, was the youngest cat that we had ever lost. He was 11, just short of his 12th birthday. He died suddenly, before we could find out more of what was wrong with him, but two of the vets in the practice that we were going to think that he probably had some sort of tumor or cancer.

One thing that I will always remember about him was how much fun he was to play with, as he was always up for playing. He loved to be chased and loved to play with ball toys and play inside of cardboard boxes. Laughing
