In Response to Re: Father who has Alzheimer's: I have a father who has Alzheimer's I need to know if thru AARP I can get some kind of in home care for him? can anyone tell me. Thanks Nanette Posted by Lovemydad Lovemydad, Sorry about your Dad's condition. The AARP is only a membership organization with no funds for actual help. However there may be some searchable articles on this website for you to read to determine what could be available in your local area. Much of your answer is going to be based on the income status of your father. A good place to start is the local dept. of aging in your municipality. There could be an adult daycare, respite service or home care help that could give your Mom a break. They can also give you some resources for long term care for Alzheimer's patients. If he is a Veteran, you should also contact the VA to see if he can access some service via the VA - they have an Aid and Attendance program but here again it is asset based since the need is great. You & your family do need to start investigating what is available, what the cost maybe or if your Dad qualifies for any financial assistance. Each state is different as to their subsidized programs and nature. You might also contact the Alzheimer's Society for any direction they might be able to give you. Here are some links for you: Alzheimers Association: Medicare & Medicaid WebMD: Alzheimer's Disease and Financial Planning |

I'm sorry to hear about your father. I know how hard that must be for the whole family. You might also want to check out the Alzheimer's Caregiver Center at http://www.alz.org/care/. They also have a 24/7 hotline: 1-800-272-3900. There's also a new government site for Alzheimer's http://www.alzheimers.gov. Under the How to Pay and Plan section, there are some resource listed specifically for vets. Best of luck. |
