Hi All,
Just a few lines to let all of you know how much I understand and sympathize with you. My grandma was sick with breast cancer. It killed my family to know that one day she may not be with us any longer. We took care of her. We tried to get her a round the clock home attendant or nurse. The city would only allow 4 hours a few days a-week.  My grandmother passed away in 1999. Her doctor felt that I should put her in a nursing home where she could be taken care of better than what I could do. It was a very hard decision for me to make. I was so use to taking care of her myself.

After she passed I decided to start up a company that could provide services for seniors. Where they could get the help they needed and the companionship that they wanted for affordable prices for the family. I am listing the affordable accommodations that we provide. If anyone should ever need anything, feel free to send me an email, and I promise to get back to you as soon as possible.

Growing old is not for sissies.  One of the hardest parts of growing old and needing help is accepting that mere fact....you can no longer do some of the things you used to do.  If you have a daughter, you are lucky, but if you have sons, prepare yourself for only brief bouts of understanding and help. When I had my heart attack in November 2011,, They paid for a weeks worth of help for which I was very grateful..  Three months later, when I had a bowel resection for cancer and came home after 36 days in the hospital, they were there for me for two weeks, taking shifts.  Now that I need a third surgery (all this in less than a year) for spinal cervical stenosis that is comprimising my spinal cord, they are pretty well sick and tired of me and the entire medical scene.  I feel like an Eskimo that has been put out on a block of ice with nobody to talk with or turn to.  The best thing a caregiver can offer their growing old mother is kindess, understanding (even if they don't understand) and trust.  It's better than any medicine and is pain free.

Personally, I don't want to rely on my family for anything - and I am structuring my life as best I can for that reason.

That is not because of our relationship, which is fine,  but their life is their life and they have family considerations of their own - husband and children.

I agree, I am trying my best to have everything under control so that if and when I become unable to care for myself, my children will not have to even though they would not mind. It is such a heavy load, taking care of someone and still trying to live a normal life. I am in the process right now, trying to get my parents to give me power of attorney for everything so that I may be able to take care of any and all issues that come up with them. They are both in their middle 80's and are beginning to need help. I try to have them give away things they have in barns, garages, extra bedroom closets, etc, things they have forgotten about, so I will not have to go through it all alone at some point. I give away everything I do not use. For years, I have been going through all rooms twice a year and donating anything I have not used in the past 6 months. Works great for me. Any advise from anyone on if a Durable Power of Attorney will cover both finances and medical issues?
thanks for any response. Everyone taking care of others, please remember to take care of yourself because if you do not, who will take care of your loved one? Caregivers need caring for also.
