9-11-2001 was THE most horrendous day that I had ever experenced in my life! At that time, I was a Store Manager (aka.) General Manager) for a Major Department store in the Southwest. Althouth I was scheduled to be on the closing shift that day, I still got up early every day, played with my doys, watched the daily news feeds, and had my coffee rituals. I always wanted to be ready to hit the floor running once I got to the store.
As I was watching the news, behind the anchors heads, I saw the first plane hit the World Trade Center! I immediately started to really get dressed for work and turned up the volume of the TV so I could hear what exactly was going on. Such devastation--and how are all those incredible folks higher up going to get down? So many questions to be answered!
Oh, No! Here comes another plane and it appears it is headed directly for the second tower. May God forgive us all for these incredible actions that right now are killing so many people, of which I am sure are many nationalities, and thought they were going to work on such a glorious day!
So many other parts to this most horrific day, but I had personal things to priortize:
- I had an entire store to run and to keep the morale up.
- I had phone calls to make on my break as I had friends who fly for United.
- I have a sister who's little girl's birthday is today--are they postponing it or downsizing it?
I immediately called my maintenance supervisor and asked if he had the radio on back in the dock area. He stated NO
to me. I said ok, please listen to me clearly--this country is under a Terrorist attack. Both World Trade Center Towers have been hit, the Pentagon has been hit, and Shanksville, PA has been hit. I do not know all the details, and there is most certainly a high amount of speculation out there. One thing I am going to ask of you today to help me with, is if you see someone come in, and it is obvious they are not handling this news very well, would you please send them up to me? Later in the day, I will be walking the floors, but I think first thing there will probably be the need for some office one on one talking time--just trying to understand it.
As I was driving past Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix, it was the eeriest feeling. No takeoffs were happening, and the very few planes that were there felt very cold and lifeless--definitely not the active Sky Harbor that I know! Even the freeways had far less traffic than normal, it just seemed like everyone (rightly so) was in some sort of a fog or a trance. How could this happen to America? How dare someone or some group try to take our peace on this land, and shatter it for their unscrupulous purposes?
Then, there were other things that I did in my store the following day involving the associates and the customers, but that story is for another day.
