Yes, there are many "goodies" in the tax code for the middle class and
poor.  The tax code has been a tool for driving social behavior; you get
the behavior you reward.  Fixing the taxation system will be politically
painful.  There will be resistance from every American as their cherished
"cookie" comes up for elimination.  Change is painful; yet we must accept the fact that  shared sacrifice is required to fix the mess we...yes we...have
created.

I totally agree.  We are now in a "New Normal" and many tax (credit/adjustment) perks just don't do the trick anymore.
The tax code could be made much simplier just getting rid of a lot of these enticements.
Where we use to get a tax credit for some action; now we are getting penalties for non-actions.

Would people contribute to retirement accounts like an IRA or SEP if there was no tax benefit?  I don't know.

How much of an enticement is the home mortgage interest deduction especially now when the rates are so very low but try to touch it and the housing industry screams.
