A left wing professor at NYU has been pitching the idea of a wealth tax to replace the income tax. His rationale to support a tax on wealth is that wealth in the U.S. is even more unequally distributed than income. He would like to see a redistribution of wealth from the more to the less wealthy. He defines wealth to include all assets including savings, investments, real estate and anything else the government can count. |

Since when a professor at NYU makes laws for the United States of America. But Grover Norquest can black mail every senator in the Republican Party by making them sign a pledge to not raise taxes on the 1% when the 1% pay less taxes the the average American. You call that appropriate? You call making a person making over 250K a year pay the same tax as the person making 40K a year unfair? Because that is what at steak here not what the obscure professor wants. There are extremist on both sides of the fence and one thing the President has said is they both have to Compromise. Signing a pledge not to raise taxes is not compromising. |

It sounds like you need to take a few classes at NYU. The word is "stake" not "steak". The top 1% pay 37% of income taxes and the top 10% pay 70%. Nearly half of households pay no federal income tax. |

If I had any hatred, which I don't, It wouldn't be for the the majority of the people who elected the President to a second term as most Republicans are implying now. Sorry for the spelling mistake, I know Republicans can't stomach that, just look how they threw Mitt under the bus when he made the mistake of losing the election. And the 1% have to pay their fair share like the "Majority" of Americans feel they should. |

do you realize that increasing taxes on rich people (even if their lawyers wouldn't fight it) would give much less then we need if the usa economy is to survive?Without changing the policy the taxes will not help. (as in "raise taxes so our government can start another war") |

Regardless of what it would give fair is fair. If the middle class, poor and disabled have to suffer shouldn't the rich? After all our situation was caused by the rich not by the poor and middle class who worked at making an honest living while Wall Street took and took not by hard work but thievery. But yet the Republicans want to cut SSI and Medicare while not touching the rich. Is that fair? no, it is not fair but the rich will always have enough money not to suffer--but get even more money instead.Taxes are not fair, true--wouldn't it be better then if we paid no income taxes, rich or poor? |

Without taxes, how would the Govt. pay it''s bills? Regardless what people say we can't let business run all aspects of our lives someone has to control them. That is why we have Govt. to protect our citizens from Big Business and other crooks. I'm not saying all of Big Business is bad, because they are not but there are some who will take advantage of our people. We still need Govt. for oversight. We still need a military even though we shouldn't use it foolishly as Bush did. But we have to take care of our own and that is done with taxes. Look at the money spent on the Presidential campaign and you can get an idea of just how rich Big Business is and they refuse to pay taxes. In France the Govt. just put a tax of something like 70% on the rich. The situation we are in at the moment will only be fixed by taxes and cuts, but both have to be balanced. Well Gail, as my mother used to say " You call them your friends? I would say yeah they are my friends. She would say do they laugh with you? I would say yes. She would say do they cry with you? I would say no. She would say well they are probably not friends. I feel the same way about the rich. If they are not willing to cry with the rest of the country "let them go some where else. All they are is what my mother called fair weather friends.
