The Truth About Taxes and Benefits

Misconceptions and Realities About Who Pays Taxes

Statistics about the share of U.S. households that pay federal income taxes are sometimes cited as evidence that low- and moderate-income families do not pay sufficient taxes. Yet these figures, their significance, and their policy implications are widely misunderstood.

  • These figures ignore the substantial amounts of other federal taxes — especially the payroll tax — that many of these households pay.
  • Most of the people who pay neither federal income tax nor payroll taxes are low-income people who are elderly, unable to work due to a serious disability, or students, most of whom subsequently become taxpayers.
  • Moreover, low-income households as a group do, in fact, pay federal taxes. These households also pay substantial state and local taxes.
  • When all federal, state, and local taxes are taken into account, the bottom fifth of households pays about 16 percent of their incomes in taxes, on average.

Jan, Shhh Romney, Ryan and The Right Wing Tea Party dont want anyone to see those facts !!!  Remember Romney said 47% of Obama's supporter's dont pay any taxes, play victim and want hand outs. Who's in that 47% Romney is cutting down ? Well  a large portion is our beloved struggling seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children.
To me, It's unacceptable and disrespectful that Romney is attacking and belittling our  seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children, who cant work because of age or disabilities. Romney says we want to be treated like victims, thinking that we are "entitled "  to healthcare !!!  Is Romney for real ???
Our seniors paid their dues in their healthy years, as did most disabled and our poor children deserve our support and respect as well,  but now the Right Wing Republicans see them as burdens. The Republicans say there isn't enough money in the budget for current programs for our seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children to live with dignity.
Where is the shared sacrifice the Republicans talked about at their convention speeches ? It sure isn't in the Republican Paul Ryan Budget for 2013 or Romney's Plans. Whats is in Romney's and Ryan's Plans are more Tax Breaks for the Wealthy and Cuts in Funding for our seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children's programs, including $200 Billion in cuts to Medicare. Shame on Romney, Ryan and the self interest  Right Wing Tea Party.
Jan, thanks for caring for the little people, at their most vulnerable moment.  Response to Truth about who pays taxes:

Jan,
Your post will have to go as an editorial in the local newspaper here in Republican Louisiana where hardly anyone can afford to be a Republican. At every turn  these people need the Federal Govt. assistance from storms when Insurance Companies will not honor policies after they lost their homes to Big Oil ruining their environment and driving people out of their homes.   And lately large lines getting food stamps due to Hurricane Issac.  Does sound like less Govt. to you?

Hey, I didn't know we seniors were deadbeat victims who are dependent on government handouts! Romney says he doesn't care about us. I guess we'll have to do like he says and vote for Obama.

Gail,  Somehow I knew you would say something like that. 9% in Taxes taken from a family living on $30,000 per year hurts that family alot harder than a billionaire paying only 1% in Taxes. Posting percentages is the only fair way to compare. The  bottom line that really counts to a low income family is being able to afford putting food on the table. It's about fairness.
Money and the bottom line may mean everything to you, but not for me and many other concerned Americans. What means more to me, is being there for our struggling seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children. It's called having compassion and it's the right thing to do as Americans. If I have to pay 3% or 4% more in taxes, I'll survive and sleep better, knowing my beloved seniors, disabled, veterans and poor children have a better shot at surviving with dignity.
That's what really counts in my world. Response to Re: Truth about who pays taxes:

He wasn't referring to people on SS Medicare or Military. The reference was directed at the permanent welfare class, those that stay on welfare from generation to generation.

rich people hire a bunch of lawyers whose only job is to find loopholes within tax law.
it will be ALWAYS like that, no matter the weak protests.

the only JUST way is to eliminate income taxes entirely (and cut government spending (drastically) so other revenues are enough)

I believe in giving people a "HAND UP" during whatever calamity they face.  I came from poor - real poor and if I can do it, a lot of others can too.  I believe in people and those with able bodies and minds can redirect their lives and that of their children but it has to be their priority.

Government is sometimes an enabler just as people can be the same.  An alcoholic will use and use until it is too late for him/her - leaving wreckage in their own lives, turning away those that have tried to help for so long - then it all comes crashing down.

If we get this economy moving again, it will help everybody.  Let's use that stuff that government and other helping enterprises provides to the fullest - public education, libraries.

I don't want to see our children and grandchildren saddled with this debt.  I realize that we need tax reform, big time.
Government has used tax credits and incentives for a long time to get us to do things.  I think this has gone overboard and now has resulted in mayn that don't have to pay taxes.  That goes for people and businesses.

I'm retired and still pay taxes - although not as much.  So why is it fair to tax people more if they have earned it when everybody has/had that same opportunity?    Being poor should be a temporary condition especially in the country that I once knew - maybe it is not the same anymore and that has me real concerned.  What happens when it all falls apart ?

See, I'm interested in how you think it should work.  It is easy to talk about the problems because they are there in full view - the solutions are the difficult matter.  If it is just to tax the so-called rich more - what happens when that is no longer sufficient?

NO, seniors are not dead beats dependent on the Govt.  They deserve everything out of Social Security and Medicare they put in all the years they worked and paid into it.  The deadbeats are the Republicans who want to cut these same programs that seniors paid into for years while these same politicians were wetting in their diapers and we were holding their hand  and sheltering them until they would eventually try to stab us in the back.
