I think the fed govt. should pay back the money it took out of social security over the past years.  Social security would then be solvent enough both now and in the future to care for retirees, we could then receive the increases that have been taken away.  They should also make the increases retro to when they stopped.

CORRECT !!   For better understanding, over the years, the system has run up an overall SS surplus totaling $2.4 trillion. What has happened to this surplus? . Since the funds were spent on something other than Social Security, the government declares that it loaned itself the billions of dollars, calling such "lending" intragovernmental debt. For all Social Security revenues that are spent on non-Social Security programs, the Treasury department issues bonds to the SSA and those bonds are held in the Trust Fund. (Surely we can have confidence in anything called a Trust Fund.)

Think of this type of lending for a moment. The federal government is in debt to itself. Compare this to debt in the private sector. No business declares that it's deep in debt because it loaned itself money. It's the same with families. Parents don't lay awake at night trying to figure out how to repay the money they loaned themselves. The government, however, thinks that it makes perfect sense to collect (for example) $100 of tax revenue, spend the $100, and then declare that it now owes itself $100. This scheme is not limited to Social Security. (excerpt from an article from http://mises.org/daily/3469 )

I believe the attack on Social Security needs to be countered with a rally on Washington, D.C. by empassioned supporters. I also think that AARP is the only group that could effectively organizing it. The time is now to stand up and show support SS so that it will be there for our children and grandchildren.

Make no mistake...corporate America is one of the big forces behind killing SS. They resent having to contribute their share to it for each employee. Do your kids know that their employer is bound by law to match his or her contribution to SS? Many do not know this!! (The current rate for employers is 6.2%.)

I agree.     America’s own worst enemy is it's corp-ocracy ,    the Devil’s marriage between big business and our twin political parties.    It is ruling and ruining America.    This is not the way it has to be at all.

There's an even bigger reason why Big Corp is against SS, and it's not simply because they have to contribute half for their employees.  It's because Wall Street can't wait to get their hands on the public's retirement money.  Can you imagine if our Social Security fund was invested in the market in the past few years?

Why is AARP running a commercial on TV implying that congress is trying to cut Social Security?  Any change in Social Security that has been talked about would not apply to any AARP current members, unless you have started taking member under 50 years old.   Your commercial is a lie!  And you are scaring your members and people posting to this message board.  You can thank President Johnson (a democrat) for destroying the SS fund when he started using it for the Federal General Fund.  Even then, the money paid in was going into treasury bills (promissory notes) that would be in trouble today, because your democrat friends have run up trillions in debt buying votes.  So the money we put in is gone and it is now hand to mouth funding.  Our kids and our grand kids are paying for our retirement.  Proud of that?  I can understand why they want to opt out, because they can see that this Ponzi scheme is going to collapse and their money that they put in to support us, will be gone too.  AARP supports the current administration running this crap about protecting social security and at the same time supports Obama-care, that will put us even more in debt.  This organization is in the Democrat's pocket in a tit for tat arrangement.  Wake up and support people that want to cut spending and get a handle on debt before we hit bottom.  These people in Washington are about winning elections buying votes and no concern for anything else.  MHO  Skipjack68

CORRECT !!!    The corporate powers are behind the forces that want to kill SS.....  included in the protests going on Wall Street and a big on planned shortly in DC.
