Good topic!! I volunteer in a local nursing home. Our neighborhood has many families from India living in it. About 10% of the nursing home residents are the parents of these families that were later brought in. Their bills are paid for by Medicaid. My mother, who is 95 years old and has lived here all her life would have to spend down any savings she has and sell her co-op before she would be eligible for any assistance. |

The immigrants parents leave the money and housing in their native country and compete with our real poor senior citizens for the Medicaid. Good topic!! I volunteer in a local nursing home. It seems a small money. But think about per year budget: 3 mil. people for $20,000 each - that is 60 billion dollars per year. Those who are not poor grab from our working people. |

We have 10 - 20 million illegal immigrants now. Their US born children will bring them legal and eligible to welfare. If we do not change our policy, we need to cut more our retiree's benefit to support the free nursing home. The citizen's parent immigration is UNLIMITED by law. This issue should getting attention no matter which party gets the power. The money to support those free nursing home will hurt our retirees, not the rich 1%. |

Our current policy encourage parents to immigrate to US: Parents immigrate to US can save sponsor's tax in the first 5 years as dependent since tax deduction is not allowed if the parents are not legal US resident. After 5 years, parents can enjoy welfare, no more burden to the sponsors. |

US is an immigrants society. It used to attract people from all over the world because it provides more freedom, more opportunities if you are willing to work hard. Now it attracts people because it provides easy money without hard work. |

US had good tradition to help poor people - charity. People volunteer to give, and only really needed to receive. Now, welfare become entitlement, even they have never contributed to the society and are not even poor. It is legal robbery. According to BEA report, US budget for welfare was 24 billion dollars in 1960, and 2.2 trillion dollars in 2010, about 100 folds. We need to pay attention. |

Lilly, Greed from the Nursing Homes is also a huge problem. My wife was a nurse for years at a Nursing Home. She talked about residents who came to the home with $750,000 - 1 million dollars in lifetime savings and it was gone in 8 - 10 yrs. and they had to live on Medicaid. Talk about rent gouging. I agree we have to be mindful of where our tax dollars go, but our Nation is wealthy enough to allow our seniors and disabled to survive with dignity. Spending tax dollars to have each others backs is better than waging Wars and then having to rebuild those countries. mamdm84: I absolutely agree with you. I read stories about greedy nursing home took advantage from our poor senior citizens. Shame of them. The war is even worse. Our young men and women fought without fulfil their life. Our tax money created hate from Iraq and other counties. Our senior citizen's Medicare will be cut. Why? |
