Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, says hunger among senior citizens is on the rise and he wants more money spent on senior meals programs.

"The seniors who are served by this program have worked hard throughout their lives.    They've paid taxes. They've responded to the call for military service   . They've volunteered in their communities. And they've made possible the quality of life we all enjoy today.     And now at the end of their lives they are struggling to make ends meet," Gordon said.

According to a report prepared for Sanders' committee, more than 5 million American seniors face the threat of hunger and 1 million a year go hungry.     One in four women on S S  live in poverty because they didn't make big-bucks.

Since the recession began, there has been increased demand for senior meals programs. For about $5 a day, seniors get a hot, nutritious meal and a visit from a volunteer who checks their well-being.

Ken Gordon of the Northeastern Vermont Area Agency on Aging-- one of the agencies that delivers senior meals-- testified Tuesday before Sanders' committee in Washington.

.

Sanders says it makes more sense to invest in meals for seniors than in the much more costly hospital stays and home care that can result from poor nutrition.

In my community, if we have a rise in demand for the meals and they (income) qualify for the free meals, those in my community kick in more local tax money to meet the need.  We look after our own.

FANTASTIC! That's what I meant federal agencies are less useful than neighbors.
instead of paying taxpayers money to maintain these agencies the goverNMENT should not take that money from people (income tax)

ehem...Ron Paul proposes that....

For this particular type of program, it is kind of stupid to send the money to Washington vias the IRS only to have it sent back to the State and for the State to send it to the locality or community.

But see Astra, they have to do it this way cause sometimes those in these communities PAY NOT TAX or a much smaller amount than they need.    Then we have to tap the other tax payers in the country so that this community gets their needs.

i see your point - as my husband also makes it.

what  about poor districts and counties, when they are in need?

But they will be helped on the STATE  level! Not the federal agency full of bureaucrats who don't even know much about the region!

Churches, fundations reach nationwide!
Even private people from other states helped Katrina victims once they realized FEMA wouldn't.

here is about aid at home  ((of course Ron Paul speaks too, i can't help it--he makes so much sense!
