Do your very best to see the Charlie Rose interview of Steve Brill [sp] author of the article in the current TIME.  Also catch the interview on Jon Stewart.  They may be repeated AND you can access them on the web with a little effort.  What you will see and hear is something you all need to know in order to be informed and be able to venture an opinion lucidly and responsibly.  Let's hope that's possible.

I completely agree that "for profit healthcare" increases our deficit as I saw a segment on CNN about the tremendous cost for a patient spending a few days in a hospital. His bill included pages of confusing treatments and supplies. The patients are the victims of this greed as most have no idea how to understand or read these entries. The responsibility of the patient is to recover and not to be suffocated with such huge bills.

Back in 1997, my husband entered the ER after being struck by a car about 9:00 PM. He spent the next day recovering and was released at 11:00 AM the following day. His bill was nearly $14,000 of which insurance paid 80%. When I asked for a list of the billing, I received about 5 pages of tests done and medications given. Most people enter a hospital in this condition unaware of the costs, so it's easy to charge them for anything, even for the patient in the next bed who has no insurance.

The health care industry are blaming people for their illnesses or accidents, but they have no control over how they are being treated. The lack of honesty and our inability to have a universal health care system is and will be the downfall of our country.

i read the EXCELLENTarticle in Time--Shockingly these hospitals are supposed to be non-profit (do not pay  taxes!)!
And some make more that 700 mln profit/year!Director of one "non-profit" hospital in Pittsburg got more than 5 mln last year!
Patients are overcharged with everything, charged few times for the same thing but worded differently.

And here is JON STEWART talking about it (i wish i found smth of better quality but the interview is great!)

In respect to the ones in our country  who are so in favor of privitizing everything  we have ...... is actually destroying our way of life so   I'm glad to see that more info regarding this is being passed along. .

Our hospitals and medical profession are doing their job and it's expensive because now we have more technology,  advanced equipment that needs to be maintained and people trained to use it.    Of course,  medical is going to be higher because of this and we cannot have these CEO healthcare insurers making millions of dollars of profits off of sick people and have insurance companies maintaining a administrative cost of 30% of every premium you pay out of your pocket that isn't used for your healthcare.

My brother works in the medical field, specifically in the X-ray department. He admits that the equipment is very expensive, but that it's often used by doctors who order tests that he feels aren't always necessary. He works in a smaller community hospital that was absorbed by a large corporate hospital years ago. He's been there for over 30 years, but sees it going under as there are less people coming in who can pay.

One issue that he sees again and again are the extensive means to keep very elderly and ill people alive. Since he works in the ER, he sees the elderly going to the ER from nursing homes, then to intensive care for days, then back again to the nursing home. He knows that this is costing Medicare a lot of money for people who will only gain a few more months of life. He sees profit as being the motive for the health care industry that is doomed to fail.
