The following is what the President told AARP when asked about Social Security and Medicare.  What are  the Republicans waiting for?
: Social Security is not in an immediate crisis. It's not the driver of our deficits, the way Medicare and our health care programs are. We can easily tweak the Social Security program while protecting current beneficiaries, ensuring that it's there for future generations. There are ways that involve, for example, slightly raising the [payroll] cap. I think it's a pretty sensible thing to do. What I've said to [Republicans] is, "I am prepared to sit down with you, the way Ronald Reagan and Tip O'Neill sat down together. And make very modest adjustments that extend the life of Social Security for 75 years." We can do that again. But it's going to require us not playing politics with Social Security. Understanding that millions of Americans have been lifted out of poverty because of Social Security. It is the linchpin of our social safety net. We can't privatize it. We don't want it to be subject to the winds in the stock market. We want it there for people over the long run.

Both Democrat and Republican Congresses (recall the House controls the purse strings) have raided the Social Security and Medicare "Trust" funds to dole out their General Fund Pork Barrel spending; thereby keeping their constituents gainfully employed and themselves in the "Halls of Power".  Now, after years of promises to pay back all that they have "borrowed" and turning it into a ponzi scheme, they want to "balance the budget" on the backs of the little guy; while some treasonous wealthy vacate the country (that gave them the opportunity to become wealthy) to avoid any tax increase.

Reminds me of the Memorial Day hypocrisy were we "honor" our veterans while giving them garbage for equipment (I know cause I served), training that's a joke (unless you're special ops), and cut Vet benefits budget after budget.

Where are the Republicans?  Behind closed doors thinking up new ways of wealth redistribution from the middle class and working poor to their wealthy patrons; just as they have been the last 50+ years

Nearly one in three beneficiaries are not retirees; such people receive disability benefits, 1% are aged, 56% disabled, and 31% disabled children, according to the Social Security Administration. IF the SS fund invested in the stock market this past decade...all these people would be in the creek without a paddle.

And, it is still the case that Social Security represents the only source of retirement pension income for the vast majority of Americans.    Inflation eats up savings that the ordinary American has by the time they retire.    Only the top 5 percent of U.S. households have earned enough additional income to match the rise in housing costs since 1975. says Business Insider.

Govt policies and corporations have created a nation who have to rely on social benefits.....the wealthy own $40 trillion in assets----- 28% of the income each year goes to the 1%   so  we are expecting different results than to rely on social benefits ?
