When we have a $15.6 trillion national debt, we cannot afford it. When the five largest oil companies have made over $1 trillion in profits in the last decade, they don't need it. When some of these same polluters have, in a given year, paid zero in federal income taxes and actually received IRS rebate checks worth millions, they don't deserve it. When fossil fuels are the number one source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions, creating a planetary crisis of global warming that is already causing devastating extreme weather disturbances, we can't ignore it. As people throughout our country are demanding that we invest in energy efficiency and sustainable energy, and when Congress has instead allowed key sustainable energy incentives to expire even as Big Oil reaps billions in subsidies, it is time to change our national energy priorities. So today, Congressman Ellison and I are introducing the End Polluter Welfare Act in the House and the Senate. Our legislation is the most comprehensive ever-introduced on this subject. It ends all the tax breaks, the special financing arrangements, and the federal research and development funding. We reform royalties to ensure that fossil fuel corporations pay their fair share. We ensure that never again can a company like BP take a tax deduction for money it spent cleaning up the disaster that it caused in the Gulf of Mexico. And we close the loophole that lets tar sands oil pipeline operators avoid paying the oil spill clean-up tax. In Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT: The fossil fuel industry pays a greater percentage of its income in taxes. Compare it with Apple or GE. Second the oil, gas and coal industry is what drives our economy. We could employ millions more were it not for EPA restrictions on those industries. Bernie Sanders is a Socialist- he doesn't deny it. Finally, what we give to the petroleum industry is no different trhan what other corporations receive. If you want to look at real subsidies, look no further than the billions we gave to "green" companies. Posted by Labrat64 Maybe you want to hand the country over to the 1% who own 38% now and $40 trillion in assets while we the people go into debt because of them. Maybe you want to support people like Romney that hides money in the Caymen's & in Swiss banks so he doesn't pay his taxes and then the middle class like myself is required to pick up the slack. While you don't want the EPA to monitor our water so it is fit to drink and air that is free of mercury... then you certainly go along with the billionaire Koch brotherswho represent the dark side of corporate America. Koch Industries' units have stolen oil from federal lands, rigged prices with competitors, paid bribes to win contracts in six countries, sold oil equipment to Iran despite a U.S. ban, brothers Charles and David Koch have relentlessly pushed for less government regulation cause they have been charged with releasing tons of cancer-causing benzene into the atmosphere and have had five criminal convictions in the U.S. and Canada But they do support the GOP cause the GOP supports THEM. |

As a scientist, I'm familiar with process that is used. You are misinformed. I'm also familiar with solar cells (one of my projects). We';re a long way off to make solar or wind a viable alternative. Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT: The oil, coal and gas industries all receive taxpayer subsidies they don't need. These are industries that are obsolete and growing more so by the day. Those in this industry know it's now a monopoly conglomerated by a handful of the biggest recipients of corporate welfare. There simply is no constitutional mandate that states that taxpayer revenues are required to keep these businesses from failing. Only those all too closely tied to this monopoly reject out of hand any hope for alternative energy even thought it's already been proven that there is enough competition to put these polluters out of business for good. Anyone who has seen the tar sands in Alberta Canada will attest to the filthy process--oil loaded with sand that takes billions of gallons of water and chemicals like benzene, a known carcinogen, to remove the remaining oil from the dirty sand. This is what the Oil Industry wanted to transport 1750 miles in a pipeline that also meant handing over American properties and residences to CanOil. If anyone denies this, check out the records in Canada's National Post from 2005 through 2007 when Canada's government and George W. Bush tried to ramrod the Keystone Pipeline deal through. Worse, is the hypocrisy of Big Oil regarding their prohibition of solar energy they know is the next phase and works all too well. Why else would First Energy out of TX load down tens of thousands of street lights with solar panels? To retain a profit that never reverts back to customers. Posted by Eleanore1946 |

II guess private equity is good if it's in Obama's corner. You neglect to mention obama supporter Federico Pena which is responsible for the attack ads obama is running. He fired thousands at Delmonte and Solo. Or...Blackstone Capital which raised funds for obama. Apparently many leading democrats don't feel the way you do-Corey Booker is an example. Besides it's not the 1% vs the 99%, it's the 53% of taxpayers vs. the 47% of those that pay no taxes. Did you know that under current tax law $4 Billion tax dollars were given to illegal aliens who claimed relatives in Mexico .the Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT: In Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT : Maybe you want to hand the country over to the 1% who own 38% now and $40 trillion in assets while we the people go into debt because of them. If Big Oil wants to help, make gas prices affordable so everyone who depends on it can afford it. After making record profits year after year they can afford to pay taxes as well. They can restore the marshes, swamps and waters they destroyed through the years of their unquenchable greed. But they will never replace the lives or land they destroyed. John D. Rockefeller was a great philanthropist at the end of his life but could never make up for the lives he ruined on the way to the top. Big Oil gives little back compared to profits that are made and what they step on and destroy for their quest of riches. NO lab-rat you may not be a socialist but you are not a capitalist either unless you have done the things John D. Rockefeller has done. If you depend on Social Security and Medicare like the rest of us. If you like to wake up in the morning and breath fresh air. If you like to hearing bird sing and enjoy a stroll through a forest. If you think our children and grandchildren should enjoy these things, you are not a true capitalist. You are a wanna-be capitalist. You had your chance and you blew it. You are as Socialist as the rest of us or else you wouldn't be wasting your time writing these post which will profit you nothing. We';re a long way off to make solar or wind a viable alternative. Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT : Posted by Labrat64 Republicans voted against taking away subsidies. The 5 big companies spent more than $145 million last year on nearly 800 lobbyists whose job is to defeat any bills. The $4 billion they'll likely get to keep as a result represents a 2,700% return on their investment. BP announced Wednesday a first-quarter profit of $7.1 billion, a 16% increase from last year. ConocoPhilips reported a 44% increase, to $3 billion. Exxon and Chevron are expected to report today $15 billion in first quarter earnings, also an increase of more than 40%.1 In all, the five largest oil companies have reaped nearly $1 trillion in profits in the last 10 years. But more outrageous than jaw-dropping oil company profits, is the fact that our government actually rewards these companies with even more of our money for maintaining this disastrous system — to the tune of $4 billion a year in tax credits and subsidies. It's time for that to end. |

If not for the EPA our citizens wouldn't be as healthy and need to be healthier. Do you really think Big Oil is worried about the health of anyone when it comes to money? I can't believe you think that they would put the health of a person in front of profit if not forced to. Just have to look at their track record to determine that. n Response to Re: POLLUTER WELFARE ACT: If Big Oil wants to help, make gas prices affordable so everyone who depends on it can afford it.
