SPEAKING with a Canadian citizen last week about their health care system, which as we know is universal - womb to tomb - coverage. When I asked some specific questions, the response I received was: "Oh in Canada, we don't even give health care a second thought because we've had it for as long as we can remember." It is true that Canada’s system is not the same as the U.S. system. It’s designed to deliver a somewhat different product, to a population that has somewhat different expectations. But the end result is that the vast majority of Canadians get the vast majority of what they need the vast majority of the time. It’ll be a good day when when Americans can hold their heads high and proudly make that same declaration as Canadians who get what they need the vast majority of the time. Canada’s health care system is NOT “socialized medicine.” In socialized medical systems, the doctors work directly for the state. In Canada (and many other countries with universal care), doctors run their own private practices, just like they do in the US. The only difference is that every doctor deals with one insurer, instead of 150. And that insurer is the provincial government, which is accountable to the legislature and the voters if the quality of coverage is allowed to slide. The proper term for this is “single-payer insurance.” In talking to Americans about it, the better phrase is “Medicare for all.” LET"s keep fighting for medicare for all here because putting young and old into ONE PAYER would be cheaper and having the GOVT handle it....would eliminate the 30% profit margin the insurers take. |

These messages are too important to just have on this message board. Everyone needs to hear these messages. Oh yes, law makers read the newspapers, at least the smart ones. Posted by creppelrm Of course...please do. We the people must be the outlet for passing along information. I for one cannot understand why people who want other's to rely on themselves don't feel that everyone should be mandated to pay for and carry insurance rather than rely on taxpayers people to pick up the tab when the uninsured go to the ER or have a catastrophic illness. But, then we should have a universal plan like the rest of the industrialized world instead of being so backward we rank 37th when even ....Turkey ranks higher than that in healthcare ....that's how bad it is !! |

Who! Do a little more checking into the Canadian system of healt care. My best friend is originally from Canada and one little problem is with wait time. If you need surgery you may wait months before you can get it. Talk to some more of our friends north of our border before you decide they "have it made with health care". |

Posted by gchambers1 If you checked you would find out the only wait is when it is non-emergency in Canada. It's the same in the USA.....you don't get an operation here without consultations and scheduling unless it's an emergency. The problem in the USA TODAY is all these scare tactics that are used to discourage Americans to have a better healthcare system that doesn't pay insurance companies 30% of the premiums towards their profit margins. Americans Fear Canada's Health-Care System, but Not as Much as Canadians Fear America's. Americans lead the world in hating their patchwork mess of a health-care system and for that because there is nothing else they lead on except for spending the most money on the military--- Americans are, indeed, number one with spending the most money on the military....to a degree it's more than several large developed countries combined. The money goes into the pockets of war-profiteers. |

Just like the USA there is a waiting period for non-emergency surgery which you go through the necessary consultations and scheduling. Emergency care is always given. Americans Fear Canada's Health-Care System, but Not as Much as Canadians Fear America's. Americans lead the world in hating their patchwork mess of a health-care system and for that because there is nothing else they lead on except for spending the most money on the military--- Americans are, indeed, number one. |

Thanks for bringing this up (thewindysideofcare) it needs to be discussed for the sake of everyone. . I found this to be a good website..... http://johnconyers.com/healthcare ACTUALLY---Support for H.R. 676, "The United States National Health Care Act," continues to grow across the country. Although important, the reforms that were passed last year will need to be strengthened. Private health insurance premiums will continue to rise and health care costs continue to escalate. (This was the beginning paragraph in the link above) ON a personal note, my daughter has a $2000 deductible whereas insurance is practically useless and I know a family who dropped insurance because it was over $10,000 and will just take their chances no one will get REALLY--SICK. About every night in the news, is a new fund-raiser that we even know about..... for a child or mother who needs medical treatment that can't afford it. This is the USA of AMERICA.....not some third world country !! I don't blame the GOP congress I blame the people supporting them for not standing up for the ONE PAYER or Universal Healthcare. There are somethings that should be an AMERICAN issue not a democrat or republican--issue |
