What does it mean to get older?

I'm 73, grew up in a middle-class, hard working, non-political family, educated in public schools, and after military service finished college with help from GI bill! I'm not now nor have ever been afraid of anything or anybody, was taught to believe in the 'Golden Rule" but NOT interested in any formal religion. I have always been turned off by the hatred taught in churches, in the name of God and the Bible. When of age, i have been aware of party politics and have always voted for the individual, both Democrat and Republican (pre-tea bagger). I voted for JFK, once for Reagan before realizing a Mediaocre actor, while drifting further to the right, only made a mediaocre President., was turned off by the war mongering of Bush Sr, thought Clinton was a very good President, and sickened by the illegal stupidity of Bush, Jr and his brain Karl Rove. I always thought getting older was in your 60's and retirement age. I didn't think that meant getting dumber or more cowardly. I was proven wrong when Bush Jr, the Coward from Crawford, after allowing 9-11, convinced many Americans, especially seniors that his corrupt politics were needed to protect them from that Ol boogie Terrorist. What a crock! He also convinced many senior veterans to join his 'swift-boaters' to lie about Kerry's military service while they dis-honored ALL medal winners. Proud to be a veteran, right? And try as you might, we will NOT let you forget his Recession, two wars on credit cards, and his economic mess dropped on President Obama! Another fact is that many of the Tea-baggers, are seniors, made brain dead by all the lies from Rove, Koch Bros, and Faux News. Seniors can't decide that it's pretty dumb to slur our President and Democrats who are trying to defend SS, Medicare, and Medicaid. Instead, they want to replace this President and Democrats, with Tea-Baggers who want to destroy Medicare and SS. Is that dumb or just cowardly. Ironic, these seniors so fear Blacks, Hispanics, even young people, they have no problem with oppressing voting rights and civil rights for all of these groups. They prefer to have some white politician decide their medical care instead allowing a women the right to choose. They accept the Lies that people on food stamps, are frauds,scum, etc, although, the facts are people on food stamps are 60% white, 29% black, and 76% have some income from working two or three, low paying jobs with childrens and elderly living with them. Finally if you're one of these dumb or cowardly seniors, does that mean you will turn your back on this President and Democrats in Congress that have worked to protect SS, Medicare, Medicaid, veteran health care, women's equal rights. and shoot your self in the foot either a 1% Republican whose only history is to get righer by buying and closing plants and putting thousands of workers out of work, or a right-wing nut who would work only for the christian right and catholic church's pedifile structure. There's always that old Tx biggot and hate monger, Paul. You choose! And, yeah I truthfully said, Tea-Baggers, so as not to insult the only true Tea-Party that happened in Boston Harbor by TRUE American patriots, FOR their country. They weren't dumb enough to wear tea-bags on their ears, or hats, with white haired seniors waiting in line to get a hug or hand shake from some anti-American slug! |

Is that enough to be old? my mother is 85, like Ron Paul full of energy and with clear mind---I never think of her a old on the other hand i know sluggish people in their 50's with brain fog--they feel old! i think of age more as behavior than number. "biggot and hate monger"? So untrue! We are as diversified as any part of society but do have (some) very common aspects. I vote based on whomever I think will do the best for our country under whatever adversities we are under. However, in that same regard, I have to also consider what affect any nominee or incumbent policies or party beliefs may have on ME and my loved ones. I am a fiscal conservative - and probably a social centrist. I don't care much what others do as individuals as long as it does not affect me in any way. I believe very much in personal responsibility and I carry that to the extreme, even to the point of believing that the American relationship between employer and employee has dumbed down many workers in this area of personal responsibility. I will cast my vote under those self-realized guidelines. |

Posted by papabob No need for feeling sorry for me - Time marches on . . . . and the "blame Bush" game has to stop sometimes. Re-read my post because I said I did have to consider what adversity our country might be under to determine my voting allegiance. I pointed out to you several areas where Medicare and Medicaid are already a joint effort between government and private industry - A voucher system is already here in many respects except actual people aren't getting the money or the choice. The Feds dish out the money to the states under Medicaid; each state sets its own eligibility standards and programs with the Feds just doing some of the general rule making. Having some "$$$ skin in the game $$$" has been proven to make a difference in how people spend healthcare dollars so I think the premise has merit and would allow people to pick what is best for them - individually. I am not selfish or uncaring in my views and I don't think Republican or conservatives are either. We just see the solutions to problems in different ways. I am sad to see people unemployed or stuck in poverty; I was there once. Yes, I used the tools that were supplied to me as a break out point. Public education to learn how to think and reason and make my own decisions about everything in my life. I want to see each person in our country have the ability to reason, comprehend and understand whatever comes in their lives and be able to make the best decision that they can for their lives, under whatever circumstances. I want individuals to strive for what is best FOR THEMSELVES - we have been trying to get to this point forever. Haven't we? It is like I said, there will always be a safety net for those who experience periodic difficulty or those that have circumstances that make them unable to provide for themselves - but even in these circumstances, we can give them choices. The SNAP, the TANF, the Unemployment compensation programs do this now - we give them money (a type of credit card or voucher), a set amount and from there they make choices as to how to use these funds that are hopefully the best for them. These things represent food and vital necessities of life for a family on these programs - why should health care be any different? |

Papabob-if you cared so much about endless undeclared wars our debt (which now equals GDP) - you would not support Obama (as I think you do). So what is Obama doing for poor Americans? I only know that he took into his eco nomic advisory team A CEO of GE - company that does not pay taxes and opened its plant in China bc the labor is cheape. He keeps bombing new places, keeps military bases (in Germany! Italy! 700+ of them) and Ameican people pay for it! |
