This is a normal Libertarian view, to scrap the tax code, and I was surprised to see this article come from a Republican Governor. I live in Louisiana and though Gov Jindal has made this statement, I am still a little stunned. Way to go Bobby! Read more here: http://theadvocate.com/home/4597073-125/jindal-eliminate-income-taxes A quote from the page: Gov. Bobby Jindal said Thursday that he wants to eliminate the state’s personal and corporate income taxes. “Eliminating personal income taxes will put more money back into the pockets of Louisiana families and will change a complex tax code into a more simple system that will make Louisiana more attractive to companies who want to invest here and create jobs,” Jindal said in a prepared statement. |

Posted by wisemagic It seems that we tried this under Bush, but look where it got us. If no one is really paying taxes, where is the income going to come from to maintain the state? The "job creators" who are the corporations won't come back here unless they can hire workers for the cheapest labor possible. As long as they're getting tax cuts and loopholes, no state will interest them. Here in Illinois, the corporations have been given tax cuts, but they threaten to move elsewhere if they don't get even more.

Posted by intersan I don't really remember this under Bush, but I was preoccupied with 9/11 and the spending that was going on. The Libertarian theory here is no Federal Income tax. We want to enact The Fair Tax...( Actually abolish the IRS ) http://www.fairtax.org During 2006 and 2007, the seven states with no state income tax whatsoever, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, led the nation in net population growth. ( I'll do more research on more recent years of these states when I can ) http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/incometaxandtheirs/a/nostatetax.htm http://usgovinfo.about.com/b/2008/04/01/americans-continue-migration-to-south-and-west.htm The main thought here, is with no state tax on corporations, businesses can come to Louisiana and immediately enjoy a tax break. That opens up more jobs, and with no state tax imposed, they can offer a little better wage. We are sorely behind in wages unless you work for an oil company. Also with no state tax being held from your pay check, you have more money to spend. NOW, the way the state maintains the revenues is a slight increase in sales tax. They will raise sales tax 1/2 to 7% ( this is still undecided ). So with the extra money the people have, when they make purchases, the state still earns revenue, but with increase businesses, more jobs, more money flowing, more people spending... the state will even out. Everything else is still the same. We still get nailed by the Federal tax, Capital Gains and the like. But this is a step in the right direction. When people have more money in their pocket, they will spend it. The state will do fine. With my pay, for example, with no state tax being withheld, I'll see about $80.00 on average, in my net pay each week, and no state tax to file on April 15th. That's 52 weeks x $80.00 = $4160.00 Instead of me giving this money to the state in the form of tax with holdings, and getting a refund each year, they will get it a little at a time as I make purchases. I am just amazed that Bobby Jindal, a Republican, would even consider such a change. And, it still has to get approved. It's almost a trade off. Not everything we "purchase" will come under a sales tax. Example: Those that pay rent to private landlords, don't pay sales tax. The extra money in their pocket will make things like this a little easier. |

In Response to Re: Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindal: Eliminate personal, corporate income taxes: Such a declaration would NEVER come from a Democrat, so i'm not surprised he is a Republican. Ron Paul, a Republican, is also for abolishing income taxes. Small government can be supported by other income (from trade, sales tax etc). Posted by Astra2012 Yes, a lot of things that Dr. Paul was up for, are also what the Libertarians are up for....lol At one of the Ron Paul Revolution gatherings Gary Johnson started off by thanking Dr. Paul and he also said that if Dr. Paul had received the Republican nomination, he ( Gary Johnson ) would not run against him. The Libertarians hold a great deal of respect of Dr. Paul. Mainly because Dr. Paul is Right!....lol |

In Response to Re: Louisiana Gov Bobby Jindal: Eliminate personal, corporate income taxes: RON PAUL, and probably GARY JOHNSON as well share something very important: the establishment is not crazy about them ((and so: people trust them more). however i have problems with Bob Barr of lp. He endorsed the establishment's Gingrich...he didn't have to. Anyway, libertarian policies seem to make most sense. The problem is in the establishment R and D... Posted by Astra2012 I know what you are saying. I don't know what Bob Barr was thinking, and I'm almost positive he wasn't thinking. ![]() |

Anyway, Matt Larson talks about that decision--seems that sales taxes would go up - so the state government gets its income---like Matt I hope they will cut spending as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJkhH9afN4c |

This is basically a trade off. We can continue to have taxes held from our paychecks as they do now, or pay taxes at the cash register. The main advantage here is, not everything you buy comes thru at the cash register. Rent is not a sales tax item. So for many people, the extra money they have in their pockets at payday, will come in handy for other expenses. Example: If your state tax each week is 20.00, you will have an extra 80.00 per month in your pocket. Spend it wisely. And, if nothing else, plan that 80.00 as your sales tax money when shopping. Hey, one less thing to have to deal with, with the state. This should make shoppers more responsible. You don't need everything you buy. Impulse buying should be something to think about. If you really don't need it, don't buy it, or pay more in the form of tax if you do. A responsible shopper, will see an advantage to this. |

Posted by wisemagic Finally states "raise their heads" and start reclaiming their power. People spend their own money better than politicians who take- FORCEFULLY (try not to pay!) from them and then waste much of it...Some governors are smarter than others... |
