In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama proposes policies that make things worse for the economy and worse for Americans:

  • Higher government spending,
  • More dangerously-high government. debt,
  • Continued meddling in needless, costly foreign conflicts,
  • More rules and regulations,
  • Higher taxes,
  • And more assaults on our freedom.

Despite whatever response Republican politicians serve up, their proposals — and their votes — do the same thing: Preserve and grow Big Government.

The Republicans say they want “limited government.” Limited to what? A $3.8 trillion federal budget? A nearly $5 trillion budget?

Look at the Republican budget plan crafted by Congressman Ryan. That’s what Democrats and Republicans are planning to raise spending to over the next 10 years. “Limited?”

Democratic and Republican politicians are planning to raise the debt from today’s $16-and-a-half TRILLION — to over $20 Trillion dollars. “Limited?”

How high does government spending and debt have to be before Democratic and Republican politicians say it’s too much? Will they spend until the economy literally collapses — while workers struggle year after year to find decent jobs?

While retirees are trapped in poverty? And the middle class disappears?

When politicians talk about “limited government,” it’s their way of covering up the fact that they refuse to cut government spending — and that they continually raise spending.

Nothing new there. There used to be some differences in where they spent the money, but the right has moved so right & the left so left around the ball, they've met on the other side & are now 1 in the same.

Perhaps Libertarian & others can come up with a candidate?

Perhaps some young people or even retirees need to run?

A single mom living on welfare has a better understanding of living on a budget that just about anyone. All these people learn "on the job"... perhaps a non-power hungry mom on welfare taking care of a parent can run?

Ah, yes.....the circle game.  Joni Mitchell wrote a song called "The Circle Game".  Wonder if that is somehow related to circular logic?  I think I understand the points you made, unfortunately money and spending is not the critical issue.  Deterioration of individual freedom is........and there's the rub.  As you note, the radical religious right faction dictating policy to the Republican Party [authoritarian to its tip-toes] has moved that Party so far to the right on the political scale, that should they achieve power, a theocratic plutocracy will be the result.  Conversely, the Democratic Party has indeed lost touch with the individual except as an item in a statistical tally.  We do need a third party to create an alternative to the power structure in these two parties.  Freedom demands responsibility for your actions.  How much you get is directly related to how responsibly you exercise that freedom relative to any and all other people.  Don't do it and guess what.....? You don't get it.  In Response to Re: Libertarian Party response to President Barack Obama's 2013 State of the Union address:

As long as the people continue to elect Republicans and Democrats, they send the message that they approve of the way these two parties run the country. That is the biggest problem.

The Libertarian Party had Gary Johnson as our candidate during the last election. He's awesome, and we hope to have him run in the next election. The Green Party had Jill Stein. She too is awesome, and had run against Romney for governor. Neither party has the billion dollar super pacs to buy them the office, like the big 2. We need the peoples support. They both wanted term limits for members of congress, end to the wars now, down size government, repeal the Patriot Act and NDAA. All of the things the big 2 don't want to talk about. Gary has more experience in government than Romney had, plus a better track record. He felt that the limited exposure he had, compared to the big 2, was what hurt his chance the most, so he is already on the campaign trail visiting colleges and getting activist started. He had the best voter turn out of any Libertarian candidate to date.

Maybe the people will wake up some day and see, that continuing to elect the big 2, is just continuing to repeat the same failures over and over.

Gov. Gary Johnson's response to President Obama's State of the Union Address:

Friends,

Barack Obama said something remarkable Tuesday night.
Standing in the House Chamber of the U.S. Capitol, delivering his State of the Union speech, the President of the United States spent an hour laying out government programs for everything from “investments” in energy and roads to helping us pick the best colleges for our kids. THEN, with a straight face, he told us his list of “solutions” wouldn’t increase the deficit “by a single dime”.

And many of our Congressmen and Senators actually applauded -- as though he was serious.

Unbelievable.

You can read my full response to his speech here: OurAmericaInitiative.com, including my conclusion that his claim that a mind-boggling array of government programs and “solutions” won’t increase the deficit must be based on the same math that has given us a $16 trillion debt.

There was a time when the State of the Union message was a simple written report sent to the Congress.  Not a bad idea.

In fact, as I listened to Obama Tuesday night, I was reminded of Jefferson’s first State of the Union “report”, sent to Congress in writing.  Explaining his efforts to scale back a federal government that he believed had grown too large and too powerful, he wrote:

"Among those who are dependent on Executive discretion I have begun the reduction of what was deemed unnecessary. The expenses of diplomatic agency have been considerably diminished. The inspectors of internal revenue who were found to obstruct the accountability of the institution have been discontinued. Several agencies created by Executive authorities, on salaries fixed by that also, have been suppressed, and should suggest the expediency of regulating that power by law, so as to subject its exercises to legislative inspection and sanction.”

Wow.  If only we had a President now who could send those very same words to Congress today. Imagine someone in Washington being able to report, truthfully, that we had “begun the reduction of what was deemed unnecessary” in the federal government.

But, unfortunately, we don’t have anyone in Washington today who can say that. In fact, there are very few who can honestly say they even want to reduce anything.

That leaves it to us.  As a Governor, I proved that government and its cost can be reduced, with the result being more jobs, less regulation, and greater freedom. The same can be done in Washington, if only the politicians can get the message that America doesn’t need -- and doesn’t want -- MORE government.  We demand less.

That, in a nutshell, is what the Our America Initiative is about.  Beginning in April, we will be taking the message of less government and more liberty to college campuses across the nation.  Likewise, we will be taking our message to the media and to the Internet at every opportunity.

I hope you will join me.  Your support is crucial.  Make a contribution at OurAmericaInitiative.com to help us spread our message.  Get a Live Free t-shirt at CafePress.com/OurAmericaInitiative.  And most important, get involved. We have a LOT of work to do!

Thank you, as always, for your friendship and for your dedication to liberty, economic freedom, and restoring individual rights.

Governor Gary Johnson

Honorary Chairman, Our America Initiative

P.S. Tomorrow, I’m headed to the International Students for Liberty conference in Washington, DC, where I will be joining a special taping of the Stossel Show.  I’m looking forward to such a great gathering of young people who “get it”.

Truth is----we don't TAX these corporations and individuals enough who are  making the most money in the USA ...even at the time this nation came to crisis in 2008.   And we don't  SPEND enough on things that matter to the majority of the people when we have a over-bloated Pentagon budget that makes a huge profit for a few profiteers .....which  is equal to a budget of a  dozen other industrialized countries.     We also have a too low-minimum wage so too much money goes to the TOP and leaves the rest  struggling from paycheck to paycheck who can barely afford to eat never mind pay taxes.

Until people are aware of what the problems really are and blame the wrong ones and wrong things......nothing will change.

That is why a third party is needed. Republicans and Democrats are not going to change anything. The big banks and corporations that buy them the elections, want things as they are. This is why nothing ever changes every 4 years when we elect the same ole, same ole, except the names of the elected.

Minimum wage has never kept up with the cost of living. No one on minimum wage is buying a car, or house. They barely keep food on the table. Employers pay poverty wages these days because the employee pool is over flowing. They don't have to pay top dollar for college grads, simply because there are millions desperate to do the job for what ever they can get. Once upon a time, going to college and getting a degree was a sure bet on getting a good paying job. Now, a degree will get you in the unemployment line with the rest of the working class.

Taxing corporations more, just makes them outsource more. It becomes cheaper to outsource, and ship the products back to the U.S. They pay dirt cheap labor in China, or wherever, and then manufactures pass the shipping cost on to the consumer. Apple is one that is famous for this. Nothing Apple sells, except their operating system and software, is made in the U.S. A Mac notebook costs about 600.00 to make in Shanghai China, and they sell here for 1999.00 and up. Steve Jobs had a dinner with Obama, before his death, and told him he was “headed for a “one-term presidency” if he did not make his administration more business-friendly". http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/Elections/Vox-News/2011/1021/Steve-Jobs-to-Obama-You-re-headed-for-a-one-term-presidency
If the Republicans would have really had a worthy candidate, and actually stood behind their ideals and beliefs, Steve may have been right.

The Libertarian stance is to scrap the tax code, abolish the IRS and replace it with the Fair Tax. ( fairtax.org) But that much change scares people, even though, at one time there was no IRS in the U.S.. We also wanted to cut military spending back to the level spent in 2003, which was around 300 billion. That is still double what China spends, and they are the closest, to the U.S. in defense spending. Term limits for congress. Get the old way of thinking out of the way of progress.

The U.S. spends 900 billion a year on defense. More money than the next 26 countries behind us ( 25 are our allies  ) yet we mostly play the offense game, starting most of the conflicts we get into.
( I use the word 'Conflicts' simply because congress is supposed to sign a Declaration of War, according to the Constitution. That hasn't happened since WWII, so technically the U.S. hasn't been in a war since WWII ).
Republicans and Democrats pretty much ignore the Constitution when it best fits their needs.

Did we need to put 200,000 troops on the ground in Afghanistan at the cost of 3.6 billion a month? ( http://costofwar.com ) Apparently not, when our intelligence told us Osama bin Laden was in Pakistan years ago, and a simple seal team accomplished the job in one strike. Our entire presence in the middle east is a blood for oil guardianship. The gross amounts of money spent in these conflicts is staggering. This much money, if used in research to break our dependency on oil, may have put us in a new era of energy today. But war is also big business. And there are those that have investments in it and are making vast amounts of money. The Saudis are approaching peak oil. Which means that soon, their supply will diminish, and that spells higher costs.

If you really want a change in the way our country is governed, you have to vote Republicans and Democrats out, because they do not want a change. Obama's first campaign was based on "Change". I didn't see any real change. Sure, some indicators show we are progressing, but any little bump in the economy will set us back years again. His second term was called "Forward". Forward to what? More taxes, more spending, more liberty and freedom taken from the people? More government involvement in foreign countries affairs? More wasteful spending? Romney claimed, throughout his entire campaign, that he could generate revenue by closing "loopholes". During the "Fiscal Cliff Charade" Boehner claimed the same thing, yet no "loopholes", that I know of, have been closed. Another reason this ship is sinking.

We will see a 20 Trillion dollar debt by the time Obama leaves office. If a Democrat or Republican is elected in 2016, we will see 25 Trillion. There is no budget, and there is no talk of cutting spending, except on SSI and Medicare....go figure. This is what these two parties do. One of the few things, they do very well. Spend our money. The Libertarian, Green, Justice and Constitution Parties don't have billion dollar super pacs, to buy them the oval office. It's up to the people to "vote our country back". Can the Libertarian, Green, Justice and Constitution Parties save this country? We don't know, and it wouldn't happen overnight or even in one 4 year term probably, but one thing is certain; we are on a rocket sled to a monetary collapse at our present rate.
