IHi Astra, Governor Walker is a Conservative Republican, that was elected with Tea Party support. He did away with collective bargaining and dues checkoff for state workers. He also instituted pension reform and insurance reform. He was actually able to lower taxes while at the same time improve services. In San Jose and San Diego a referendum was passed by a very large margin that seeks to control pension costs. This seems to be a trend- citiizens taking charge. n Response to Re: Forward Wisconsin!: I came here just to ask what happened in WISCONSIN after I saw this clip from CNN http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8KeO_lirBo&feature=related Every coin has 2 sides--you are pleased, but this guy is devastated... In Response to Forward Wisconsin!: The people of Wisconsin have voted against the greedy public sector unions, that had Democrat politicians in their pockets.Voters are finally realizing that they cannot keep paying the lavish pensions ane benefits that these greedy unions are receiving. Several California cities also voted against this form of union robbery. Posted by Labrat64 This post does make me wonder how much KoolAid the Republican base has to drink to entirely lose their minds. There have got to be a lot of retired workers in AARP and I suggest you go the the library and take out the book, RETIREMENT HEIST, by Ellen Schultz. Schultz is an investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal (hardly a liberal Democratic bastion) and she writes a scathing report on how corporate America has been scheming and stealing the nest eggs of hard working Americans, turning that money into larger bonuses and benefits for their companies and their already well paid top company officers. " Companies have claimed for years that old-style pensions were unsustainable. Author Ellen Schultz tells Morning Editionhost Steve Inskeep that there's another explanation. "The main narrative is that [companies] are struggling to pay both their pensions and these unexpectedly high health care costs for the retirees," Schultz says. "What isn't known is that companies were well-prepared for this phenomenon. The plans were in fact significantly overfunded. They had more than enough to pay every dime for every person currently employed and already retired." Schultz investigated the changes in pension plans as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal and has written a book called Retirement Heist. In the early 1990s, Schultz says, companies were looking for new ways to push out workers, especially older, more expensive ones. She says the expensive way would have been to pay severance, "but the cost-effective way was to instead promise them a bit more pension money in lieu of severance." In the end, "you've just laid off somebody who's expensive and it has cost you nothing." |

IFirst off my post refers to public sector unions. They are guaranteed a pension with COLA's that is many times what workers in the private sector receive. In NYC a teacher that was accused of molesting his students decided to retire and is receiving a pension of >$100K/annum. Workers routinely work overtime in their last year to get pensions approaching $100K. San Jose and San Diego, two very Democrat cities, decided they had enough. They voted for a pension plan restructuring. As far as private industry is concerned, my company froze its pension plan in 2005. An enhanced 401K was instituted. Most employees were very happy with it because it gave us a choice on how we could invest. n Response to Re: Forward Wisconsin!: LABRA64...YOU SAID, " Voters are finally realizing that they cannot keep paying the lavish pensions ane benefits that these greedy unions are receiving. Labra64's so-called lavish benefits weren't so lavish afterall ...the companies had more than enough money to pay for those benefits....earned by the hard work of many workers...yet they chose not to pay them...The republicans have worked hard to sell American workers a lie...and we have bought it hook line and sinker....thus Wisconsin ill informed have assisted in the demise of the one organization who could be a stop gap to business removing any pension plan for their workers. When are Republicans ever going to get a clue they are dismantling America as they march in steplock like clueless Stepford wives...and only when it is too too late, will be aware that their zeal as patriots have been used to destroy this country! IYou refer only to police and firefighters. What about all the other public employees? Do you think it's fair for someone in private industry to retire at 65 and receive a pension that amounts to 50% of their final 5 years salary (if they're lucky), while a teacher or highway worker can retire at age 60 or less and receive a pension based upon their last years salary+overtime with a COLA to boot? Is it fair that lower earning people are supporting are supporting these "public servants" with ever increasing taxes? No, the taxpayer has finally come to his senses, This will not continue!!! n Response to Re: Forward Wisconsin!: The Policemen and Firefighters deserve a guaranteed pension and cola because THEY put their lives on the line so we can live in peace and harmony !!
