FOOD STAMPS

To qualify, households,  except those with elderly or disabled members, must have gross incomes below 130 percent of the poverty line.    The Agriculture Department, which runs the program, says the average monthly benefit per person as of last November was $134.15.    As for helping the economy,   it calculates that each dollar in benefits generates $1.72 in economic activity, including 16 cents for farmers who grow the food.

While critics such as Sessions say the program is ripe for savings, the department says SNAP is doing a good job of eradicating fraud and error, with only 3 percent of payments in 2010 being excessive or going to ineligible households.

The Senate last week rejected an amendment by Rand Paul, R-Ky., that would have saved $322 billion over 10 years by cutting it $45 billion a year and turning spending decisions over to the states.   The vote was 65-32 against, with 13 Republicans joining every Democrat in opposing it.   (  Who funds the STATES but the FEDS anyway....and the poorest states will have the poorest people.....what a stupid idea.  )

"I think Americans would be flabbergasted at the amount of money" spent on food stamps, Paul said.

Paul has adopted the ideology of  N Korea or China ....countries that believe in starving the people and children are not excluded.

I heard one of those food stamp commercials on the radio yesterday. Apparently it's very easy to qualify. The commercial had two women talking about food stamps. One questioned whether or not she would be eligible because:
I have a bank account
I own a car
I own a home All this was answered in the affirmative. The more people that are dependent upon the government, the more obama voters you have.

I don't listen to Limbaugh. Too much noise! I was listening to the news on 1010 WINS in NY and heard the commercial. The comments made were based upon my interpretation of the commercial. Unfortunately, programs that were meant to be a "safety net" have expanded to include many more people- more government dependence.

Commercials like that are obviously paid for by the republican right wing propaganda machine, which has unlimited funds from greedy corporations and billionaires. Almost 60% of the food stamp program goes to seniors and children. We cant turn our backs on everybody, we are, I hope still a civil society.  Follow  the" Nuns On The Bus Tour" and you will see Compassion at the highest level.n Response to Re: FOOD STAMPS:

Actually, it was a USDA commercial telling people that they may be eligible for the SNAP program.

Part of the money allotted to any program is for getting the word out -these info-mercials are from the government; to EXPAND the program by adding to people knowing about it.

Now I am not saying that help should not be given at least during some hard time, but the rules need to be clarified and other financial assets need to be considered and not just gross income.

I'm not talking about retirement accounts but depending on the age of the person perhaps they should be considered especially if you are old enough to draw from them but just don't have need until you are forced to do it at 70.5.

What if you own a ton of stock but only receive dividends or better yet, just have the dividends reinvested?
What if you have a ton of money in certificates of deposit?

It is the same with housing allowances for the elderly and disabled and I am not sure about Sect. 8 - gross income doesn't count the (financial) assets that are sitting untouched; possibly growing; it only counts what you are drawing out and is reportable to the IRS.

We also need a way to review - people who constantly & continuously need government services, might need more help than just food and shelter, etc.

I'm sure you have heard about the bit lottery winners that remained on food stamps and housing vouchers even after they had gotten their winnings.

Sometimes it is the Federal rules that need to be tweeked and sometimes it is the states but either way, and I am sorry to say, there are people who get this help who could easily afford things without the government help.

My own daughter was out of work for nearly two years ...and I suggested she get food stamps because I was buying her groceries on a fixed income.  She lost everything she had  cause waitress work she was doing after losing her GOOD JOB  wasn't enough income.... and BTW   was a business college grad.   It took nearly 2 years to find something decent.

There is NOTHING the authorities don't know about you when you file for  food stamps  because we have computers today that have all the information.about you and your circumstances.

DO you even CARE why people need food stamps ....or is it must easier to just mock those who are in need and most often not through their own fault.       About time the underpaid 40% of our service oriented employees  get $20 an hour so they can be more self-reliant. But the republicans won't even raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour cause it will take more money out of THEIR pockets for products and services. Then people complain about paying taxes.....and when these same people need soc security some will complain about that too.

I'm so angry at  your lack of empathy.. when you are lining your pockets with more money because some people aren't paid enough whose services you use every day....  ..I  need to go cool off now......although  I have heard this many times before as if  people really LOVE being poor,  out of work and collecting $15,000 a year or less unemployment benefits when they really need twice that.... and living in dumps and love seeing their children go hungry.....  The idiocity of the thinking of the right wing never ceases to amaze me.
