I am 53 years old. I have paid into Social Security and Medicare for 35 years. My parents and grandparents benefited greatly from the programs, so I disagree with those who would privatize them.
But I am livid that the Romney/Ryan plan would steal from me the program I have paid into. There must be a way to stop it, aside from casting my vote.
So I am looking for concrete solutions. Here are some ideas:
1. Is there a way that those of us younger than 55 sign up for "early enrollment" in Medicare? We don't have to get benefits early. Romney's plan cuts off those who haven't enrolled by 10 years from now. Why don't we all just enroll early and take advantage of that loophole?
2. Contact the ACLU. Isn't the Romney/Ryan plan age discrimination? Why should a 55-year-old get one set of benefits and a 54-year-old get others?
3. Launch an information campaign to help people realize that the 55-year-old cutoff is just an arbitrary number. Romney/Ryan could easily switch it to 65, or 75, or higher if the economy stalls or if we get into another war.
Any other ideas???
