Surprised  Look at Bill Clinton's speech and how he explained that the Ryan & Romney Plan for 55 and Older Medicare is going to bankrupt Medicare by 2016.  This is an old Union Busting Plan that has been used for years. They want the Greed S.O.B.s who buy into this plan, to be the Fall Guys when it goes bankrupt.

What American is Stupid enough to be Greedy and STICK-IT to his Children and Grandchildren?  We worked all our lives to help our kids & grandkids.  Every generation of Americans have done this.  Why then would anyone of us be Stupid enough to buy into this Plan?  Believe you me, if you're DUMB enough to take this Gimmick, you sure will be the One to get the blame when it goes Bankrupt.  They will lie and say they told you so, but you were both Stupid and Greedy to do it.  The Wealthy will not take the blame.  But they will laugh all the way to the bank when it happens.

Factcheck.org noted that Clinton's comment about Medicare going broke in 2016 was an exaggeration, if not a lie:

"Clinton claimed Medicare will “go broke in 2016″ if Romney is elected and repeals the federal health care law. Medicare will not “go broke,” but a part of it — the hospital insurance trust fund — would not be able to pay full benefits for hospital services. Physician and prescription drug benefits, financed separately out of general tax revenues and premiums, wouldn’t be affected.

As we explained in our Aug. 22 article, “A Campaign Full of Mediscare,” the Medicare hospital trust fund is on pace to be exhausted by 2024 — or by 2016 if the Affordable Care Act is repealed. But Medicare would still collect payroll taxes sufficient to pay most hospital bills that would come due. Medicare trustees estimate the fund could pay 87 percent of its costs. The funding gap would continue to grow, and by 2050 the fund could cover only 67 percent of its bills. That’s a serious situation to be sure, but it’s not as though Medicare itself would suddenly halt all payments."

There is nothing really wrong with Social Security but leave it to the Republicans to fabricate something.  Same with Medicare, if you think for one minute they wouldn't cut the program and voucher it, just go  ahead a elect them and see what happens.  They have been seething over Social Security since FDR initiated it.  Don't think for a minute they feel any difference about Medicare.

creppelrm, I would disagree that "there is nothing really wrong with Social Security" and that the Republicans are just fabricating something. In March 2011, the chief actuary of the Social Security Administration stated, "The (Social Security) trust funds hold approximately $2.6 trillion today or about 18% of GDP. However, our declining birth rate, rising life expectancies, and retiring baby boomers will reduce the current worker:beneficiary ratio of 3.3 (between 1975 and 2008) to 2.0 after 2030. With no change, the Trustees estimate the OASDI (Old Age, Survivor, and Disability Insurance) funds would run out in 2037. However, after that, there would still be sufficient revenues to pay 75% of scheduled benefits through 2084. Closing the gap would require payroll tax increases, increased income taxation of benefits, and reduced benefit payments totaling approximately 1.5% of GDP after 2037 . Structurally, Social Security is sustainable with adjustments."

Regarding FDR initiating Social Security, factcheck, org noted the following:

"In prepared remarks released to reporters, Rep. James Clyburn engaged in partisan myth-making with the claim 'Democrats created Social Security'  while Republicans 'cursed the darkness.' History records strong bipartisan support in both House and Senate for the measure President Roosevelt signed in 1935."

If you think that Social Security and Medicare are just fine and are sustainable for our children and grandchildren without making some changes, you are fooling yourself.

As you said Social Security is sustainable with some adjustments.  It is not unconstitutional like some Republicans would have us believe.  Or should it be privatize like some Republicans want.  Or the age increased like some Republicans want.  Imagine yourself working a demanding job at an advanced age?  It''s criminal.  Regardless of how old we as a nation are getting it was the seniors that made this country great, let the kids support us for a while as we supported them all these years.  Republicans found money to support the population of Iraq and Afghanistan during the Bush administration and sending aid to their military not counting aid to other countries.  Don't even tell me that we can't take care of our own.

creppelrm, I agree that it is our seniors and their ancestors that made this country great. I am almost 57, so I expect to start collecting my Social Security in the not-too-distant future. I am all for letting the kids support me, but the problem is that there is going to be more and more seniors vs. kids to support them and the seniors are living longer than their predecessors.

I am just very tired of always hearing people say that the Republicans don't care about people and that they are only for the rich, etc. The reality is that this country is spending about $1 trillion more than it is collecitng in taxes each year and our debt is now $16 trillion. It wasn't just wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that have gotten us to this point. Both political parties have been responsible for this mess, and raising taxes on the wealthy is not going to solve the problem. I believe that all of us are going to be paying higher taxes come 2014, no matter who is elected to the White House in November.
