Forget the fiscal cliff. The real threat to the U.S. economy is not political stalemate in Washington but the Republican party itself.
From the time that President Obama first took office in 2009 through the elections in 2012, the GOP has been running on the platform of economic despair, and in fact, seems to have bet its entire future on it.
In the beginning it was easy, since the president had just inherited a massive financial crisis and a shattered economy that would take years to rebuild; all the Republicans had to do was stonewall any initiatives that would hasten a recovery, and wait. That gave them the edge they needed to rout the Democrats in the midterm elections. Following that, they adopted the strategy of blaming the financial stimulus package and Dodd-Frank for the continuing softness in the economy, which kept the pressure up on Obama and, more importantly, kept him on the defensive.
But now the landscape is different. Obama has four more years to do his thing, the disastrous Mitt Romney campaign has damaged the Republican party immeasurably, and the economy is visibly recovering, so the Republicans cannot just sit back and hope that everything will go wrong anymore. If the economy continues to grow, the president's second term will be a victory, period. That means the Republicans actually have to make sure it goes wrong -- or any hopes that they have of making meaningful gains in future elections will be dashed.
Which is why their new strategy is to actively derail the economy.
Think of it as the Republican long game -- if the U.S. falls back into a recession, the president's promises of a better future will be perceived as empty rhetoric and the Democrats will lose credibility, paving the way for Republican victories in 2014 and 2016. It may be pretty devious but it is also that simple.

To accomplish this goal, the Republicans seem to have settled on two angles of attack: Full Article: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/sanjay-sanghoee/republican-obstruction_b_2377498.html Basically, The Republican Party is not interested in the country, or it's people. They are interested in Power and Wealth. And they need to go away. Posted by wisemagic Yes, I have to agree with you. The Repbulicans have been doing everything possible to derail Obama. They can never answer the question as to "where are the jobs" where the corporations were richly rewarded with tax cuts and loopholes for 12 years. They've given huge benefits to corporations that have gone overseas. They know that small business owners can only hire a smaller number of employees unlike corporations that can hire 10,000 or more. Small businesses have to compete with all the cheap crap coming from China as well. Even professional jobs here are hiring foreigners for cheap labor. These tax cuts systematically depleted our "entitlements", our infrastructure, public and social services by keeping taxes abnormally low. It only helped the wealthy as they don't have to worry about affordable health care, public services and education for their kids. Many people didn't realize that they were being "fleeced" by this tax cut nonsense. The wealthy invest their money in other countries and offshore it in foreign banks. They're playing mind games with the people by saying that increasing taxes on the rich will affect "job creation" which is nonsense. Some people actually believe that the "estate tax" will affect them when they sell their modest homes. What they're not telling the people is how we ended up in this fiscal mess in the first place. They should explain that it's been the unfunded tax cuts, a decade of wars unpaid for, a Medicare Part D bill that helps big Pharma and the massive bailout for global financial institutions when their policies failed. They also set up a real estate bubble that burst. Instead of telling the truth, they're blaming SS and Medicare. Why are the costs for health care so high? Is it capitalism that has become far too greedy. They don't talk about the bloated military budget that's funneling billions of $$$ to private contractors and industries. We're still spending 2 billion $$$ a week in Afghanistan, but how much more to military defense and aid to countries that hate us. I blame Obama and the Democrats for not speaking the truth either as they all have their hands tied with lobbyists. The only one who really cares is Bernie Sanders, the Independent senator from Vermont. I'd like to see him and Elizabeth Warren in the presidency. |

Prieten, I couldn't agree more. I used to be a Republican until President G.W. Bush and Cheney started turning the party into Plutocrats, while waging War and cutting taxes for the 1st time in our history. Now the Republicans are in denial regarding the cost of the Iraq War and the lost tax revenue from the 12 years of the Bush Tax Cuts. The Republicans want to cut the deficit by reducing Social Security and Medicare benefits for our already struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans. Ironically, the same Veterans they sent into harms way in Iraq and Afghanistan. Many Republicans today think the only seniors, disabled and veteran's, who deserve to survive with dignity are the wealthy ones. The rest are just the burdensome 47%. They think we have all the money in the world for Wars, but Social Security and Medicare are just too costly.Response to Re: Bankrupt Politics: The Republican Plan to Kill Our Economy: Thank you for posting this. The Republican Party didn't used to be like this. They used to be the "party of fiscal reponsibility." Unfortunately, they discovered the addictive drug of tax-cuts. Now, maybe under Reagan cutting taxes did some good because taxes were high and the economy was dead in the water. But the Republicans have been going back to that well too often. Bush, Jr., cut taxes too, but the effect on the economy was muted. Cutting a smaller and smaller amount of taxes just doesn't give you the same bang for the buck. Had Romney won, we would have seen taxes slashed to ludicrous levels. The Tea Party crazies actually want to harm this country. I don't think they are patriots. Why? I think they hate America. They don't like a country where all people, be they men, women, poor, rich, black, white, religious, non-religious, gay or straight, can live next to each other in peace and prosperity. "It's my way or the highway" according to these little wannabe dictators. I am so happy many Americans united behind Obama in the last election. They didn't fall for the lies and hate-mongering. I am proud to say a Democrat defeated the Republican incumbent in my congressional district. We need to do more of the same in other districts in the next midterm elections.

What don`t you Dems don`t understand of this country being over 16 trillions in debt without a desire of paying it down by the libs?. Two things are sure to happen-Our credit rating will be downgraded which will result in higher interest and probably another recession and with the FED firing up the printing press inflation will begin to soar. In ten years your kids will thank you(sarcasm) for putting such a heavy financial burden on them. Enjoy it while you can -it is going to get nasty in months to come. |

What you refuse to realize of the Wars, tax breaks to the rich and failed policies of the Bush administration that has caused the mess we are in and not the Obama administration. That's exactly why you don't hear from either Bush or Chaney anymore, they are embarrassments to this country and the rest of the world. When Clinton left office if I remember correctly, this country was financially well off. The middle class, the rich were OK. And the rich paid taxes. And What Happened after That? I'll tell you what happened and it happened for eight years between the Clinton and Obama administration. It was and is done for the very same reason - to keep this economy moving. Believe it or not, when money is removed from the private sector to the government, it hurts our economy. |

Well taxes were part of the Clinton admin. when Clinton left office this country saw a surplus. When W. left office with his large tax cuts this country was in ruins that our current President is working to fix even as a Republican Congres wants to go back to W's failed policies. That doesn't take Rocket Science to figure that one out. The GOP establishment is NOT the Republican Party- they are greedy neocons that hijacked it and believe it is theirs and not American people's. Convention in Tampa was their 18 mln $ party (of course taxpayers money) where Boehner OPENLY lied to American people. however liberty Republicans (those for small government, non-interventionism, sound money, personal freedoms) are slowly taking it back!
