In Response to Be Aware of Extending Federal Labor Law to Home Care Workers: Just wait until the unions begin their soliciting and enrolling. Cost will surely rise. Do you offer benefits to those that you employ? Health Insurance, retirement? I assume you have to cover liability and workmans comp ins. |

In Response to Be Aware of Extending Federal Labor Law to Home Care Workers:I am a care giver in georgia and guess what I make a grant total of 43 dollars a night for a twelve hour shift.. The companys reasoning is that I get to sleep six hours because it is night. Unfortunately the client doesnt necessary sleep at night ( usually she doesnt ) so sleep is out. I would be happy just ot make minimum wage at this point,, So Michagan now you know who Obama was trying to help... All home health care agencies do not extend minimum wage to theeir employees. I am living proof. If you or your family is receiving in home care services or will be in the near future this will affect you. This information may be too late but I am the owner of a in home care company in Michigan. We provide non medical services to the elderly so we are on the frontline of understanding the implications this will have. Obama is looking to extend labor laws to in home care workers such as getting overtime and minimum wage requirements. This action also has the support of AARP. They believe this will raise the standard of living for caregivers. However it will have the opposite effect. Many caregivers choose to work in excess of 40 hours a week to make ends meet (agencies will not schedule staff to pay them time and half) and I don't know any caregiver that makes below minimum wage so that will not be beneficial. If Obama succeeds either the cost of services will have to go up and be passed on the the elderly which they can barely afford anyway. Also agencies will be pushed to place more staff in clients homes which most do not care for and many of the aides will have to look for second jobs that will interefere with the quality of care being provided, turnonver will increase as well. I thought the purpose of AARP was to protect seniors but this will only hurt them and can not comprehend why they are supporting it! Posted by careaboutcare |

I am living proof. Posted by battscbatts I don't understand why you are working for this agency or any other for that matter. If you are good at what you do, have references, bonding, your own insurance, required courses or license, etc. why not just work for yourself. There are ways to market your skills to be self-employed. Of course, you have to accept all the details, responsibilities and liabilities of being self-employed but the rewards are great. You have the right to leave this employer and find another - if you are good at what you do, your skills are in demand and will continue to open doors. You can also work for an assisted living facility under the corporate umbrella and maybe even get benefits after a vesting period. The place where my mother lives has a very low turn-over of caregivers and they are very good at what they do - they know the residents and the residents know them, at least the ones that know anybody. This is your chosen skill - get real good at it and name your price cause those of us who are actually paying out of our own pocket want the best for our loved ones. |

Posted by careaboutcare " working overtime to make ends meet is an interesting comment !!!
About 40% of our nation's workers are service-oriented employees and about time they get $20 an hour PLUS overtime pay and full benefits.....so they can be more self-reliant. But the republicans won't even raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour cause it will take more money out of THEIR pockets for products and services. Then people complain about paying taxes too as if more people should perform labor cheap.....THEN when these same underpaid people need soc security some will complain about that too. The GREED in this country is now just out of control. |
