WASH POST article --
KABUL — At least one in seven www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia-pacific/in-helping-afghanistan-build-up-its-security-forces-us-is-trimming-the-frills/2011/08/24/gIQAwYmhfJ_story.html" rel="nofollow">Afghan soldiers walked off the job during the first six months of this year, according to statistics compiled by NATO that show an increase in desertion.

Between January and June, more than 24,000 soldiers walked off the job, more than twice as many as in the same period last year, according to the NATO statistics. In June alone, more than 5,000 soldiers deserted, nearly 3 percent of the 170,000-strong force .
(As long as they have American dollars and Americans are doing everything for them.....they'll never come up to the plate to secure their own country. )

Im trying to understand more about the Afganistan culture, and have recently heard about a book by a young man, whose family is from there, and his Father was a close friend of Karzi (spelling).  It's called Comeback to Afganistan.  This young man was educated here, I think at Yale, and is desperate to help his country escape the Taliban Regime.  Can't wait to read it, also, Ale Soufon's, The Black Banner's, Afganistan backround worked for the FBI in 2005, and never received the info requested from the CIA that could have prevented 9/11.
Just wondering if anyone has read these yet?

The Kite Runner is a novel by Khaled Hosseini. Published in 2003  is the only book I have read about Afghanistan and it was made into  a movie.    Hosseini wrote another novel but I haven't read it yet.
