I agree with you. AARP sends these senseless petitions for years now for its members to sign to our Republican lawmakers here in Louisiana and I've been getting the same electronic response that everyone in the U.S. gets from their Republican lawmakers. You see, they all have the same agenda. NOthing changes. In Response to Re: AARP is:s I must say, as a member of AARP I am completely dissapointed in the organization in that you were too effete to stand with the party that would best represent our interests especially regarding social security and medicare. One would have to be a complete dunce not to understand that President Obama and the Demorats are far better for us with regard to this "right" and maintaining it as such into the future. AARP has been backboneless in its support. Take a stand - its not too late. Your're so fearful of ailienating a minority of members in the organization (yes - minority) who are too blind to see the handwriting on the wall when it comes to medicare and social security. The fact is, Romney and the Republcans will skin us to the bone and spit out our remains for chum. Get real AARP. - Fedup member Posted by Danielz |

I agree that we need AARP to endorse President Obama, so we can help prevent Romney and this Tea Party Congress from dismantling an affordable Medicare into a " Vulture " system and from privatizing Social Security into the hands of greed driven Wall Street. Anyone with common sense knows what the Republican's are up to and it's " Profits Over People ". The last thing we need is the self interest top 1% deciding whats good for the rest of America. Do we live in a Democracy or a Plutocracy? AARP falls into the IRS classified tax-exempt status because it is an organization whose purpose is to promote social welfare. It is classifed as a IRC 501(c)(4), a classification for generally, civic leagues, social welfare organizations, and local associations of employees. IRS: IRC 501(c)(4) Organizations It also has another arm (AARP Foundation) that does some charitable work for seniors and I assume that is under the charitable 501(c)(3) charitable IRC classification. The AARP has specific rules which they must follow for any lobbying, campaigning and/or endorsement and it has to be related to its primary function. IRS: Political Campaign and Lobbying Activities of IRC 501(c)(4), (c)(5), and (c)(6) Organizations The AARP makes a great deal of money from insurance company royalties, among other commercial royalties, for products that it promotes to seniors. Membership dues are but a small part of the AARP's overall budget. So to me, this organization is kind of caught on the fence as to who they are and what they might see as best for seniors in the long run, plus with this in mind, their primary purpose gets a little muddy too. Seniors are but one part of our overall society so sometimes, what is best for our whole country, is the primary overall concern. Medicare and Social Security have to have changes to preserve them for the long term and to help with the debt of this country. It does not matter which political party win this election, change will come one way or the other. |

Well, sounds like AARP is a money making orginization that depends on insurance companies for their major source of income and and really should be pushing for Romney and Ryan's plan to privatize both programs. Also I agree changes need to be made the the programs but NOT as Ryan wants. Gail, I couldn't disagree more, Are you kidding me, it does matter what party wins and you know better than that. If Romney and Ryan win we lose Medicare as we know it. It will be turned into a voucher system, that will be our " death sentence " ( Cigna Healthcare CEO's own words ). Then Romney and Ryan will privatize Social Security. Not to mention repeal Obamacare and cut $200 billion from Medicare ASAP and the Romney / Ryan cuts will keep coming, attacking Medicaid next. What will Romney and Ryan give us in return ? Tax breaks for the top 2 percent and give the Pentagon $2 Trillion more than they're asking for. What will President Obama do ? Obama will preserve Medicare , keep Affordable Healthcare and strengthen Social Security, not privatize it to the Wall Street voltures. He will also ask the top 2% to pay the same tax rate they did under President Clinton, remember when our economy was at its peak and we had a surplus ? Give the Pentagon what they are asking for, not more. Oh it does matter who wins. You said " it's whats best for the whole country " I think its obvious that President Obama's policy is better for more Americans than Romney and Ryan's policy of " Give more to those who dont need it and less to those who do ".Response to Re: AARP is Wishwashy: AARP falls into the IRS classified tax-exempt status because it is an organization whose purpose is to promote social welfare.
