Why is AARP running a commercial on TV implying that congress is trying to cut Social Security? Any change in Social Security that has been talked about would not apply to any AARP current members, unless you have started taking member under 50 years old. Your commercial is a lie! And you are scaring your members and people posting to this message board. You can thank President Johnson (a democrat) for destroying the SS fund when he started using it for the Federal General Fund. Even then, the money paid in was going into treasury bills (promissory notes) that would be in trouble today, because your democrat friends have run up trillions in debt buying votes. So the money we put in is gone and it is now hand to mouth funding. Our kids and our grand kids are paying for our retirement. Proud of that? I can understand why they want to opt out, because they can see that this Ponzi scheme is going to collapse and their money that they put in to support us, will be gone too. AARP supports the current administration running this crap about protecting social security and at the same time supports Obama-care, that will put us even more in debt. This organization is in the Democrat's pocket in a tit for tat arrangement. Wake up and support people that want to cut spending and get a handle on debt before we hit bottom. These people in Washington are about winning elections buying votes and no concern for anything else. MHO Skipjack68

The AARP commercial attempting to SCARE Senior citizens is abhorent!!!  There is NOTHING in ANY current legislation proposed by Republicans (or anyone else) that would impact current or soon-to-be Senior citizens.  Their Ad is nothing but an outright Lie and a SCARE tactic!!
This from an Organization who 100% Supported Democratic legislation cutting $500 Billion from the Medicare program!!
Sickening and Reprehensible!!!  This organization has become totally politicized....to the benefit of Liberal Democrats!!!

This is my first ever post to the AARP blog.  But I felt I had to note my displeasure with the ad somewhere!  The AARP organization has steadily moved further and further to the left.  But in most issues of the AARP magazine I managed to find some comment about ALL of us being willing to do what was needed to move this country back toward economic health.  Then this commercial.  Militant, "Don't mess with MY social security or medicare", threatening!  What a horrible, misleading ad.  Shame on AARP.  Nobody is suggesting cutting SS!  Medicare NEEDS reform!  Maybe it is time to cancel membership and join another senior specific organization.  I understand there are others out there!

Are you a pushover? It's time for us to start a movement. I'm sure in every state in the union seniors are worried about SS and Medicare.
Since AARP doesn't have their wallet open full of money to buy a lawmaker or two I think the next best thing is Occupy something. I know the disabled and infirmed cannot do this but we have a lot of healthy seniors who would look at it not only as a necessity but as an adventure.
Besides I've never been in jail before and we would get free publicity when police are handcuffing seniors taking them off to jail, doing a peaceful demonstration of course. AARP could rally everone picking a day for a nation wide strike. Think about it.

Good commercial, for people who believe that congress will not hurt social security or medicare while they are on it.  I have a bridge in San Francisco to sell them.

It was REAGAN that started raiding the SS fund. (not Johnson)  BUT OVER the  the years, the SS  system has run up an overall surplus totaling $2.4 trillion. What has happened to this surplus? The federal government spent this billions on other programs. Since the funds were spent on something other than Social Security, the government declares that it loaned itself the billions, calling such "lending" intragovernmental debt . For all Social Security revenues that are spent on non-Social Security programs, the Treasury department issues bonds to the SSA and those bonds are held in the Trust Fund. Surely we can have confidence in anything called a Trust Fund.
WALL STREET  Wall Street is the  Ponzi scheme that has taken many people's savings & created poverty for them.  Wall Street has threatened the solvency of many  pension-plans today.
Meanwhile,  -Social security NEVER created poverty for anyone iin 70+ years. put into non-risky investments...the funds the gov't hasn't "borrowed".
Some people  on AARP are 50 years old.      SOME on AARP have children and are grandparents who care about Social security for the following generation that will   probably need it more than seniors do now.
S Security isn't JUST for retirees but if a youngster gets disabled or blind----social security is there for them too.   It's there for widowed parents with children to support.
LOOK don't you worry...this country can afford ANYTHING it choses to prioritize.     The OCCUPY movement wants to change those priorities to be for the people here in the USA.....not in foreign wars ...and not in the pockets of the same 1%.
Now that AARP and SENIORS have spoken out  ..it was announced that . the CAPS shall be raised  and  they shall bring the FICA rates back to where they were before to.... SAVE this successful important  social security. program.
HOORAY....finally common sense.

Finally, I have found someone pushing back on AARP's scare tactics with a transparent purpose to mislead us into contributions!  But, why limit our displeasure to the TV commercials?  Everyday, it seems I get an Email soliciting contributions to help AARP fight the proposed reductions to SS benefits.  I know of NO such proposals and the farther left AARP leans, the more I consider dropping my membership.

It would be nice if Social Security was around for our children and not cut.

Had not 30 million jobs been outsourced to foreign countries and 100,000+ factories been moved to China because China gave them an 80% discount on everything by devaluing their currency there would not be a problem.

The Federal Deficit is an account of all the dollars in the economy. When Congress passes a spending and the president signs it the money is put in the account of the recipient, new money is created in their checking account and deficit goes up.  As taxes are collected the deficit goes down.

We have a strange system left over from be computer days where the government puts money in the banks then borrows it back with interest then spends it. See http://monetary.org for a plan and bill to fix this and pay off the deficit without causing recessions.

The ad is misleading demagoguery.

Let's all be honest and admit times have changed (US deficit, life expectancy) and we all need to change with it.   We're all in one big life boat here ..... I would have hoped that AARP would be a leader instead of spending $$$ to fuel the fire.
