I was looking at the AARP homepage and noticed the story about the AARP National Spelling Bee. There are obvious health benefits to stimulating your brain through spelling exercises and competitions like this. So I started wondering, what do you do to stimulate your brain? Do you enjoy spelling? Do you think you have what it takes to be in the AARP National Spelling Bee? Let's discuss...

I seriously considered entering or just visiting the AARP Spelling Bee in Cheyenne.  When I checked the airline costs for a flight from Dallas to Cheyenne, it became apparent that I could not afford the trip. Why in the world would AARP select a rather remote location for the contest? Makes me wonder if the organization intended to make the contest inaccessible to most of its members or just to those who are part of the 99%.
I find this action on the part of AARP rather shocking and finally decided to write about it.

By way of background, there's an explanation on the website.  AARP member volunteers created this event in Wyoming and that's why it's held there. If you scroll down and read "about the speling bee" you'll see the history.  http://www.aarp.org/entertainment/arts-leisure/aarp_spellingbee.html In Response to Re: Spelling Bee 2012:

Has the spelling bee idea caught on in the other state organizations? It would be fun if each state had an AARP spelling bee.
