After many years at the same job (manufacturing) I was laid off.  I exhausted my unemployment benies.  After two years tying to find work with no success, I decided to go to schooI.

I can afford to go the to local community college, and local four year college with grant money.  I can't really relocate for several reasons.  I'm looking at WA. State University, Vancouver campus, and strongly desire to go all the way to a Bachelor degree.  Two reasons.  One, because a few people have said I'm a bit old to start out on this path (I'm 64), and that's a challenge to me.  The other reason, the main one, is I want to get into a position where I can be a advocate for we seniors who are so de-valued in this youth-obsessed culture.  I'm able to pass math classes but I'm not interested in technology related stuff.

They (WSU) offers the usual Social work, psychology, etc., and there is a Human Development degrees program.  I'm not concerned with getting a high salary.  I'm a minimalist.  I'd just like to have some impact in a society that de-values folks because they aren't trendy, young looking, and sexy.  Any thoughts???

If you don't care about salary, Social Work could be satisfying.  I have considered it but feel I need to earn more to be able to save for retirement.  Joyce Laine Kennedy responded to me once and suggested I talk with at least 12 people in the field to get a sense of the realities (things you would deal with day in and day out) and to also see if there are many job openings in that area.  I haven't seen many openings for new social workers in my area and have been hesitant to consider that field.

I think that it is a great idea, but what counts is ultimately what you would like to do. Smile

If you aren't sure, they usually have some kind of vocational placement or aptitude test that you could take, to see what your interests are.

If I were in your position, what I would do is I would also talk to a career counselor at your university too, and find out what the job outlook is like for Social Workers and those with Human Development degrees/other types of degrees in those fields, in your area.
