I received a text message to my cell phone, allegedly from Best Buy as a "$1,000 Best Buy Winner".  I did a reverse telephone search and learned that is was an unlisted number and also that the area code was from MI.  I did not respond, but contacted my local Best Buy store where the manager informed me that it was a scam.

The old adage applies, "If it's too good to be true, it is!"
The recent changes with placing the Social Security checks through direct deposit have brought out some criminals who prey on innocent elderly people who are not internet savvy .
The fact is very simple , never give out your social security number over the phone!

Yell And, never give out your banking information over the phone!

And, of course, never let anyone over the phone know when you are home , or not home!
If they are calling and stating they are from Medicare, Social Security, or any government agency, tell them that they must contact you by mail, and you do not give out information over the phone. Furthermore, tell them you are reporting them to the police immediately.

Have you been scammed by telephone criminals?

I remember my brother-in-law used to talk very highly of online surveys which would lead to a free laptop computer or some other valuable award.  And then I started noticing popup ads that offered such survey deals when I was online.  So, I thought it would be a good deal to take some surveys and obtain a prize or compensation for the effort.

I kept taking surveys and then I would be asked immediately to take another and it kept going on and on.  So I got tired of taking them and stopped.  I never received any compensation or prizes, and only in the past year or two did I learn from reading about such scams that the goal was to keep me working on the surveys because the scammer would be paid for every survey that I completed, even though I was to receive nothing but empty offers and empty promises.

Once I learned the true nature of the scam, I never participated in surveys again.  I still will complete an online political survey that does not make outlandish offers.
