There are three new types of survey subterfuge out there, both over the phone and online. (See our article, "A Survey Con Can Cost You Big.") In one, a caller offers to install free software on your computer, if you'll just answer a few questions and tell them when you'll be home. Of course, what they want to know is when you won't be home--so don't tell them! Share your stories: Have you run into survey scams before?

I have received not just one but two calls from the scammer about my computer. They said that my computer had a trojan on it and if I would go to my computer and just give them some information their technician would fix my computer. Since I had just been on my computer and had left it seconds before I knew there was nothing wrong with it plus I also knew that Microsoft (which is where they claimed to be calling from) doesn't call consumers personally to fix their computers. I told the man who had a very strong foreign accent that there was nothing wrong with my computer. He told me he would call me back again. True to his word he called back again in a few days and we went through the whole thing again. He said something about calling me back again and I told him this time in no uncertain terms that he was wasting his time calling me because he wasn't going to get any information from me. That was the last time I heard from him.

I reported a scam to  FED X.....and they said there were other people reporting the same thing   " that a package was delayed and  contact the link provided."

I know someone who had their screen-name hijacked and it was used for criminal intent.    Had to change the screen name and it caused quite a lot of trouble.    They think it was when they made airline reservations on-line.

I do online surveys for the last 3 months.  All my surveys are for a company called OPINION OUTPOST.  They are 100% legit and I earn cash rewards.  I have already used cash rewards on Amazon and transferred money to my Pay Pal account.  Don't get me wrong, I am not getting rich but it's something I enjoy and earn a few extra bucks.  They have never tried to sell me anything and membership is also free.  I NEVER respond to anyone offering a survey by telephone.  So, be careful out there !!!    In Response to Re: Watch Out for Bogus Phone and Online Surveys:

I   I received a survey tonite regarding the Democrats  and after I give them my responses, I get a round trip to Bermuda. I hung up before they could continue. I don't think it was legit. They were not going to get any information from me. So be very careful when you receive any kind of survey and then saying they are giving you a something for free for answering their questions.

Becareful of everything. If you don't know the person then that your first sign. I still get etter in my junk folder from people that is overseas  asking for moey. I have even got in junk folder from banks saying my account has been hack click o this link. I did not even have account with that bank. Then with these coupons things they want to load the cupon stuf on your printer to me that is a sign.  Just becareful out their and pay attention to things.

I think we have all be victims of survey and marketing calls.  Seems to have gotten worse after the 800 telephone number to block telemarketing calls became so public.  If you have the time to respond to this junk, just give them a taste of their own medicine;  give all false information, maybe then these scammers will get a real job!

At least you got a phone call.  My thieves work with the phone company.  The phone company adds third party scam bills to your monthly bill hoping you won't notice.  When caught the phone company says it MY responsibility to get a refund from a third world scam that the phone company is in partners with.  This scam has gone on for many years and the phone company continues to rack in the stolen money.  No government agency is willing to take on the phone company eventhough everyone knows of the scam.  The phone company should be charged with federal racketeering and a class action lawsuit to recover years of damages.

I also got the phone call claiming to be from Microsoft that my computer had a trojan. My computer is new with up to date virus software so I knew that he was scamming me. Another scam which has been calling several time a day, tells me that I have won a $1200 home security system. They tell you that someone will call you back in 5 minutes. This company, VMS Alarms through Total Security Solutions has 41 complaints to the Better Business Bureau in the last year. Telling them to put your name on their do-not-call list does not work.

The latest one I've had is a phone call saying they can lower my credit card interest rate. They don't know what credit cards I have and they don't know that I don't carry a balance. I have asked them to remove my name from their call list to no avail. I am also on the government no-call list for all the good that does.
