Vonage won't transfer my phone number!

I signed up for Consumer Cellular over a month ago, and Vonage STILL hasn't transferred my number. They claim that they did their part, but Consumer Cellular has attempted tmany times to complete the transfer without success. So far I have a thread of 27 emails between me, Vonage, and Consumer Cellular, trying to resolve this problem. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent over the phone with them! Several Consumer Cellular techs told me that this sort of thing happens frequently, especially with Vonage. Of course, Vonage profits because you lose the number forever if you stop paying Vonage before the transfer is completed. And the tech time costs the other providers money. How many others just gave up? How many old friends lost touch? How many family members? If this has happened to you, please share your story. I have waited 2 weeks for a reply from the BBB of NJ, where Vonage's corporate headquarters is. I have filed a complaint with the FCC, but they are woefully understaffed due to budget cuts, so they haven't replied yet. It's up to us to insist on enforcement! Isolated, we have no power to make big corporations obey the law and serve their customers. However, if many of us tell our stories, together we have the makings of a class action suit, to force Vonage (and other brazen profiteers) to follow the law. (see (http://www.fcc.gov/guides/portability-keeping-your-phone-number-when-changing-service-providers) I think I can find a consumers organization to file a suit, or ask for damages and find a lawyer to take this on spec. All I need are a few others who have also had problems "porting out" their phone numbers from Vonage to another carrier. If that's you, please post here using the same headline. I hope the AARP will help sponsor this, but if they won't, I'll find a consumers' organization which will! Because this isn't about me; it isn't even about Vonage's unscrupulous practice. Now that the Internet has democratised communication, consumers can counter PR campaigns. If consumers demand that the law be obeyed, businesses will be forced to comply with the law, and fines can pay the costs of enforcement, and even shave the deficit! Remember, some companies will break the law to make a profit because they know that few people will complain, and even fewer will report them to the law! If you are having problems with ANY company treating you unfairly, DOCUMENT IT! Names, dates, phone numbers, copies of email and webmail. |

In Response to Re: Vonage won't transfer my phone number!: It's good to hear that other companies are complying with this law. If you ever decide to leave Vonage, I hope you don't have the problems with keeping your number that I have had. That's why I'm starting this campaign. Posted by ChristaConsumer I know it costs more, but I'll stick with Verizon. I'm always suspicious and wary about these cell phone and TV companies that offer cheap services. Maybe you can contact the Secretary of State in your area.
