I have been an AARP member for 10 years and all that time I have used  AARP/Hartford insurance for my vehicles.
When he was alive my husband made 2 claims but since he died in 2009 I have not made a single claim.
I have just receive my renewal policy and it has increased by over $300 this year!!!
Last year the increase was $50 and the year before that it dropped $50 as my husband was no longer on the policy.
I am not stupid and know that the cost of living has increased but a $300 increase on my vehicle insurance is NOT acceptable. I will be looking elsewhere for my insurance now. :(

Good for you.  We were with an insurance company for 43 years.  Two of their customer service reps were rude to us.  So rude, in fact, that we went searching.  Found a better policy for six hundred dollars per year less.  Go see what you can find.  Good luck.

I didn't find the Hartford  rude....I just found my insurance went up so much without my having any mishaps that  I went with another company.    I wish the GOVT would take over car and property insurance entirely.   I'm tired of looking for new quotes every time a policy expires because they keep raising the prices to make their profit margins.    At least the govt is non-profit.

I have been a loyal customer of The Hartford for 7 years. There have been modest rate increases each year, but this year they sent me a bill with a 19% increase in premium for the same coverage. Their explanation was that the change was due to increased costs they were facing. However, I was able to obtain the same coverage (from Progressive, by the way) for slightly over half (52%) of what The Hartford was asking, saving me $670! Buh-bye to The Hartford.

I've been a member for 5 years and unfortunately renewed my membership recently for another 5 years. Last year I took out auto and house insurance with aarp / hartford. I forgot one thing though, everyone is out to screw you one way or another. My first annual renewal arrived recently the home insurance went up 6% and the auto a staggering 25%.

Typical insurance con trick, a low price first year then screw the customer in subsequent years. When I phoned up no one had any answers, how very typical. It's disappointing to see however that aapr is the same as most other companies, not interested in customers only the almighty dollar. No wonder the country is going to the dogs.

I agree with everybody here(wales534 said it best), what a ripoff! My grandfather had the hartford in the 50's and 60's and it was a honest company. He never filed a claim and the insurance never increased because if you never file a claim and cost them no money they knew they were getting an "automatic rate increase" every year because all of your money goes into their pockets!
Did things go up back then? Of course they did but very slowly and most folks got at least two nice raises a year usually keeping them ahead of inflation. I was with hartford for three years, the first year was ok. The second year they hit me with $200.00 increase!! No tickets, no wreaks, NO Claims! I called and ask why the increase and I was told by the repersentive ( who sounded like a teenager)" Insurance just went up man!" To which I replyed "good bye, see you later aligator, Man!"
I had another quote for $400 less when another lady from the hartford called me back and lowered the premiem back to the old rate and gave me better coverage. I don't want or need the "cheapest" of any service or thing. just want what I paid for.
This year, round two of rate hikes, almost another $100! I called this year and the reason for the raise was the price of car parts have went through the roof. I told the lady that I have no tickets, wreaks, or claims, and I have not required any "high price car parts" since I been with them and I have "donated" $4500 to  the company in the last three years.
I checked around and with my excellent driving record I got the same exact coverage for $850 a year!! I would like to challenge AARP to investigate these clowns because I cancelled my coverage on 05/03/2012, and my policy's anniversary date is 05/21/2012. My payments were curent and today (05/29/2012) I got a bill for $46.14. I called them and talked to two different  people that said that that $46.14 was the difference in between 05/03/2012 and 05/21/2012! WTH???? I have changed insurance companies several times though the years, not because they didn't pay claims or they paid me too many claims, but because THEY KEEP RAISING MY RATES! However, no company has ever, ever, ever told me I was paying for the rest of MY POLICY!!! HARTFORD IS A BUNCH OF THIEVES THEY SHOULD RUN FOR CONGRESS THEY WOULD BE IN GOOD COMPANY!  DO NOT GIVE YOUR MONEY TO THEM THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!
