Scam call from 514-516-3552, saying grandson was in jail

My aunt just got call from a male pretending to be her grandson saying he was in jail and would she please bail him out. Then a man, Roger Wilson ,pretending to be a police officer with precinct 13 in Manassas, VA called her to say yes, he was in jail and where she could send the money. If not he would be in jail for three weeks waiting for his hearing. |

That's another version of the Grandparent Scam. Scam artists call random phone numbers and pose as a grandchild or a relative and come up with an emergency story to request for money. But be careful because these scammers can be very convincing. There's already been a lot of complaints related to this scam and it's just sad that they target mainly the seniors. They take advantage of the love and concern they have for the other family members. I suggest you tell your aunt to be cautious about such calls. If she gets another one, advise her to hang up and report the caller to the proper authorities.

I did a little reasearch and it looks like the scammers have been using different phone numbers to contact people. Based on the complaints from http://www.callercenter.com alone, here's the most commonly used lines: 360-529-6145 347-535-1494 333-589-8063 425-390-8922 I looked up the phone number the caller used to contact your aunt and it looks like 514-516-3552 orginated from Montreal, Quebec. |

The simple solution is to call your family and speak to your grandson directly. Chances are that he will be home right where he is supposed to be. Then you will be reassured and know the scam is just a scam. The grandparent scam is common and the caller usually asks for money to get out of some embarrasing situation. Then the caller asks you not to tell anyone, not even family members, because it is too embarrasing and the caller wants to avoid trouble with parents. The truth is that the caller just wants you to keep quiet so that no one finds out you were scammed and then they may help you to pursue the scammer in a complaint that may actually succeed.
