Hi, it was a scam. The FBI website talks about this scam. It is kind of a ransom where the scammer holds your computer hostage until you pay for whatever ruse they cook up. For example, the scammer may claim that your computer has been detected with child pornography or that your computer was locked for some other embarrasing reason and demand your financial details like a credit card number for the "fine." But you can simply disconnect your computer and kill the virus or malware on it, even take it to a trusted computer geek that you know to clean your computer and get it working again. Don't respond to the threats except to report it to the FBI via the Internet Crime Complaint Center, found at http://www.ic3.gov/ and they will coordinate with the FBI directly to process and investigate your complaint. Your complaint can be filed online and you can give all the details to include the money you lost and the information you may have compromised to the scammer, or the details of your Internet connection that may assist in tracking the scammer. Details of the actual malware may be helpful as well, if you can describe it in the context of a name assigned to it by an anti-virus company. Good luck ! R |
