In "Avoid Jury Notices Rigged to Get Your ID," our columnist describes a resurgence of the "jury duty scam," first reported in 2006, in which someone calls your home saying they are from a local courthouse and you are about to be arrested because you missed jury duty. It's really a ploy to get your personal information—Social Security number, bank account number, birth date—all of which can help the scammer steal your identity. Have you received this scam call or others like it?

I have heard of these scams.  I prefer to wait for the post card in the mail from the court to appear for jury duty.

Sometimes the scammer will dial your local police department by faking your telephone number, and irritate the police enough to come out to your house to investigate.  The idea is to scare you or carry out a threat arrest and the police do not know yet about the scammer until you tell them upon arrival.  That ruse is happening across the country and they are starting to do more announcements about the problem because it can tie up police officers from more important duties like real time crimes to work.  The scammer is hoping that the police presence will intimidate you into sharing your financial and personal details, but don't give in.

Later the police investigates the technical aspects of the harassing calls with your faked telephone number in order to track the source of the call in order to proceed with the investigation and hopefully an arrest.

Good luck.
