I recived a call from my card company asking if I had used my card in a game parlor.  I told them I would call them back. I called them back and they had placed a hold on the card ( I only use this card for medical purcahses). It seems some one got the number and tryed to use it to purchase on line gaming.  Since I shred all checks and offers from the company I was at a loss.  Then it hit me, I had been in downtown Chicago shopping the Saterday after Thanksgiving, wall to wall people, I think my wallet was scanned. I had forgotten to take the card out and it was the faceing out in my pocket.

Card people were great, cancelled the number and issued a new card. but now I'm contacting the other card comanys I have to require a code word or number for a purchase.

Is there any way to block these scaners?

My credit card information was undoubtedly scanned into a hand held reader, by a waiter in New York's Little Italy this past summer.  A counterfeit card was produced and used in North Carolina the same day I used my own card in Ohio.  My credit card company canceled the card.  When I phoned why the card was canceled if was informed that it had been duplicated. The crooks made a $50 dollar purchase at Wal Mart, (where you don't have to sign a receipt, nor do they even look at your card).  The card was canceled and their next purchase for $90 was denied.

I no longer "give" my credit card to ANYONE to take it from my person, and will only pay directly to the cashier so I can watch where my card goes and how it is used.

I write on the back of each card "ask for I.D.", but if the cashiers don't even take the card, my request is invalid. I don't even want any card with the RFID chip in it.  There are devises that can scan this information quickly just by someone walking past your wallet or purse.

Sometimes these scams are done by cashiers who have your card number, exp date and 3 digit referal number on the back. They can easily call in your number to make purchases or do so online. It's a terrible problem, very frustrating and costly for those of us who are honest.

I have heard of metallic coverings to shield your card from scanning.  There was a product being marketed called AlumaWallet that supposedly did this function, but I saw a few complaints about the wallet falling apart after a short while.

But the shielding idea is a good one.
