I might as well join the "piling on" happening here and report that I too have experienced the carpet-bombing strategy for renewal over the years. In fact, I just sent a 'Contact Me" email to whomever is in charge of ignoring member emails asking why, whenever I access my "Account" on the "Online Community" part of the website, I am told I am not a member and boy should I become one right away (like everyone else in this string, I've been a member for many years and currently am paid up through March 2015).

I do need to say that I have gained some welcome benefits through my membership (especially in the travel area) and both of us enjoy the publications, so I'll likely stay a member, but it does make me wonder if this mega-organization is really such the true friend of us geezerly folks as it proports to be....

AMEN!! Please see my post AARP Scam.  I am livid.  Postage expenses a year in advance, and I only take a 1 year member ship every year.  NOT ANY MORE.  Than, they outsource phone calls to India.  I have Cancer and Multiple Sclerosis, and would be happy to answer calls from here in the UNITED STATES.  I know many others that are looking for jobs.

 I WILL NOT BE RENEWING!

Oh, by the way, I logged into the "Community" page and to the left in big red letters it states "membership EXPIRED".  My membership excpires in MAY.  Perhaps better bookkeeping on the part of AARP would give me some faith.  Perhaps you find millins you are wasting where you should be representing me in Washington!

I renewed my membership for 5 years on May 22 (check was cashed on May 29) using a form that promised a free trunk organizer. I am still waiting for it. I have asked about this but have not gotten any answers. Anyone else in this situation?

Wow.  I am glad to see I'm not the only one irritated by this.

I also received notices to renew two years before expiration.  kept receiving them, and kept throwing them away.  I don't have the time to call or self-restraint to call and tell them what I am really thinking at that point.

So, mine does expire in Sept. of this year.  Close enough.

I got a renew notice WITH extra plastic credit card looking AARP member cards, the expiration date blanked until I paid.
I didn't see it as a problem because I knew I had time.
Renewed online last night.

By the way, my new membership term BEGINS WHEN MY PRESENT ONE ENDS.  There is no overlap.  No two accounts.  Just paying early, prepaying, or whatever makes you feel better.

Annoying, yes.
But I've learned to pick by battles.

Oh, one more thing.  After I presented my billing info, and concluded the transaction, I looked around, then went back to "renew your membership" and as an "incentive" you get a free American Flag.  That either wasn't there when I was renewing, or i diidn't notice it.  Whatever.

But I love my country.  So I emailed AARP, told them the situation, and my Flag is in the mail.
So, it's just a matter of choice of what I tolerate and what i don't, along with the amount of sleep I've had.

I'm glad I saw this post. I also received a membership renewal form offering a gift if renewed by Sept. 30, 2012. I checked my card and it doesn't expire until 2015! This is disgraceful.

P.S. I think they should send us the free gift for our wasted time.

I would agree with this.  It's a waste of time, but perhaps more it's a waste of funds to mail the crap, a waste of the actual paper and yet more trash for the landfill.

About 6 weeks ago I received a renewal notice showcasing a "best deal" price of $63 for a 5-year renewal and throwing in a travel bag. The reply-by date was September 30.

My membership expires August 31, 2013.

Then about 2 weeks ago I received yet another membership renewal notice showing the 5-year renewal price to be $46 and showing a reply-by date of October 21. The PO box number on the second notice is different than the PO box number on the first offer, and the destination city on both is Long Beach, CA.. There was no mention of a travel bag with the second notice.

Is the second offer legit? And more to the point, if I wait another few weeks, will the price go down even more?  Wink
