When I decide to start receiving Social Security and I am currently collecting money from my 401k and a small pension is this money counted as income and goes against the maximum amount you can make before the Fed Gov starts taking out taxes out of my Social Security checks?

Check with TIAA-CREF (tiaa-cref.org). They used to be only for educational/research type institutions but I believe they can now service the general public. The BIG point for me is their staff IS NOT ON COMMISSION so there is no pressure to sell-sell-sell plans with big commissions.  You ask a question, they give an answer and go away and leave you alone to decide for yourself.  They can run multiple scenarios for you to allow you to assess how they support your plans.  I have always found them very helpful and patient; willing to talk and explain things to me even when I'm sure I have tried their patience to the extreme.  Never a bad word spoken.  Plus, they are one of, if not the, largest plans in the world and have massive amounts under management.  I hope by now you have a substantial nest-egg to reinvest.  If not, it may be impossible to build one unless you have a substantial salary and plan to invest a significant portion into retirement funds.  Best of luck...dennis
