In Response to Low Cost or Free Telephone Directory Assistance: As a retired person with limited resources, I would like to get suggestions about telephone directory services that may be available for little or no cost. I find that some telephone directory services deliver free telephone numbers some of the time while at other times offering pricey subscriptions to services like Intelius and Peoplesmart. In the good old days, we had white pages telephone directories. But in the NY metropolitan area, we have so many different counties nearby that one could not have enough paper telephone books on-hand to look up telephone numbers the old fashioned way. And then there are long distance needs for lookup too. I am looking for a sure-fire means of supplying a name and location (city and state) and getting back a telephone number. While it sounds simple enough, free services seem to have been squeezed out over time by pricey subscription services. I used to get free 411 directory assistance as a Cablevision Optimum Voice customer. I find that Veriizon charges $1.50 per use of their 411 service, and the price for 555-1212 service is $1.99 per usage. Are you having better luck with finding telephone directory services that do not charge an arm and a leg?
