In Response to Re: How's All Those Retirement Savings?: In Response to Re: How's All Those Retirement Savings? : "THEY" tell us to save for retirement (which the retirees today did) But what for most Americans...what one can actually save from the wages of yesteryear are not good enough for today's expenses even if they were invested wisely. That's why we were promised Soc Security would be there for us. So what they are doing is saying we want to or reduce benefits or get rid of the program entirely. Then meanwhile, they cut the interest rates to near ZERO so we are eating up the principle we saved so diligently instead of being able to live off interest income. And we won't have anything to leave to our kids who will need it more than we do. Women suffer the most.... 60% of women hold low-pay but NECESSARY clerical jobs, & around the same number of e women are totally unprepared for retirement. Actually 1 of 4 depend on SS for 90% of their -income living in or near poverty. Given this experience....what motivation does it give the next generation to save any money for retirement ? I suppose they will if they don't examine the stats as they stand today. Posted by JANMB One of the responsibilities that we have in this free society is to plan for ourselves. Nobody has to be stuck in a low paying job if they have adequate mental facilities to learn, think, read and respond. Sometimes this is just a matter of setting priorities in one's life - education, family planning, how we spend the money that we do make through the years, how we add to our income with investments & savings. Since I was self-employed for the majority of my working career, I had to learn how to put those $$$$$ to good use. I had no employer to do it for me. I pay for my own health insurance, I contribute 100% to the money that is in my retirement with no "match" from anybody. I paid my own taxes with NO employer match for self-employment taxes of Medicare and Social Security - 15%+ of self employed earnings. If people don't like the amount of money they are paid for a job or occupation, why do they stay - they have the freedom to change. The middle class and even the poor (I came from poor) need to take control of their own lives while they can to change things. |
