We can be the only place in the country where non perishable foods from trucks that have been in an accident go.  In the Carlisle, PA area there is a store that advertises 'bents, bumps, and bunches of bargains.  It is run by the Amish who apparently buy up the 'bented and bumped' foods and sell them at a great discount over the regular grocery's prices.
Dented box of Cheerios - $2.00, $2.50 for the really large box.  You don't eat the cardboard.
Premium Martinson coffee (dented cans) is going for $5.00 for a 34 ounce can.  Yes, the paperboard container is dented, but you don't use it in your coffeemaker, just the contents.  I could go on, and on, but you get the idea.
Ask around, and I'm sure there are other places like this across the country.

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to this posting thing. But, I always liked arts and crafts projects. So, to butify my home in different places, I shopped at the dollar store and Walmart, and bought some fake flowers, a small glass vase, and some irridescent glass rocks and put me a little floral arrangement together for less than $4. Also, I found an old piece of fabric and put it underneath and sprayed the flowers with a sweet smelling perfume.  I received more complements on that little project
than I did when I paid large bucks for them in the past.

Try it. This project is money savy and relaxing.

In the winter months we use an electric space heater in our living room. I also started wearing layers of clothes for warmth and although it took me awhile to get used to I ended up wishing I had just done that sooner. I also notice that alot of my neighbors use there fireplaces, and we would if we had one on this floor. We have an older home and our bills would be twice  as high if we didnt insulate with plastic on the windows and some of the doors. If you ever never tried the plastic insulation I highly recommend it. My husband used to always do it but now I can do it quite easily and quickly.

I save by using the foam liquid soap dispensors and put a few shots of another liquid soap into the bottle and fill the rest with water.  It works great and saves money on buying new soap refills.

We found that our local 99 Cent store get their fresh vegetables on Mondays. They have a lot of good fruits and veggies. we also buy dry goods and paper products there.
We have only found a few select things we don't purchase there, meats and some dairy products they just don't carry. It has saved us a lot.

But let's use this forum to talk about other ways we save. Share your thoughts and tips with other members and maybe we'll all have a little more money in our pockets this year.

If you use lumer scraps from a mill for your fireplace, please be aware that these have not been aged, as firewood usually is, and have far, far more pitch than firewood, which can cause creosote to build up in your chimney and start a chimney fire..  You should age them for a year, or have your chimney cleaned much more often.  The expense of a chimney fire can be terrible.

It is informative and valuable post for financial crises.

Every person likes to save their money as possible as he can and use it to make his future bright.

These are 9 rules or 99 rules?

I have been on a mission to cut living cost for several years - I hate to spend more than I absolutely have to.
We love to travel and also get out of the Az. heat.so that has a bearing on how we allocate our funds.
We were fortunate to be able to sell our small family business and our larger family home so had enough money to buy a small residence and also a VERY small cabin in the white mountains of Az. (at 7000+ feet) and have no debt. on those tproperties.
1. So the first  big saving we have is minimal AC costs in the Phoenix summers as we just leave and go to the cabin where we ran the A/C only 5 days last summer. Our A/C in phx. could cost upwards of $300-$400 per month in June thru mid Oct.
2.We had two decent autos(with v-8's) when we retired in 2006 and kept them until 2011 when we traded one in for a Prius . We still have the truck withj 191000miles that we use as a second vehicle when necessary. Our prius around town in the winter averages 58 miles per gallon and about 54 when using air. We have saved $4400 in gas over the first 40000 miles. ON the down side our payments are way more than that but we chose to buy the car at that time as Toyota had zero interest for five years and over time the car will generate savings (we keep our cars for MANY years. The truck is a 1998 so are in the 15th year for that vehicle. The one we sold was 10 years old.
3. Our Move in costs when we sold and down sized were kept to a minimum as we
a.Did our own interior painting
b.Built our own back yard fireplace, barbecure and patio wall
c.Used a mover for only the big heavy items as wife moved all the rest in small plastic tubs at the same time as I was painting the interior of the new home.
d.Rented out the old home until we were able to sell it
e.Purchased a (new)reasonably energy efficent home with good insulation, e glass windows  designed with most glass facing north to avoid sun heat gain. This home is in a retirement community so we have many free or low cost amenities suh as pools, exercise room, and MANY activities.
f.Purchased a regular lot (not on golf course etc. )
g.Avoided putting money in the garage such as cabinets, epoxy floor. We brought our old melamine whte cabinets from old garage.
h.Put in our own ceiling fans thruout
I.Kept ALL of our old furniture and made it work
j.
4.Day to day savings for us include.
a.CFL's thruout
b.Power strips for electronics and only lap tops
c.Run our TV at low picture settings.
dExtensive use of fans to minimize A/c
e.Do our own house cleaning and yard work
f.We vacation by cruisingand sign up only on greatly discounted cruises. (Our goal is under $100/day total cost for a vacation)
g.We are blessed to have friends who have given us free airline tickets thru this year so we have taken advantage of that in our travels until we  lose it this October.
d.do our own maintenance. We put down wood floors to replace worn carpet by buying bamboo (good recyclable product)   at Costco. Did three rooms for about $1500. Used the free bulk pickup provided by the city to remove the old carpet so no cost there.

ALL FOR NOW BUT I KNOW THERE IS MORE

One more saving. We get offers from the Honda Casino in the town we spend summers in - we get $10 of gas once a month at the casino so we take advantage of that most months of the year. Not much but works for us.
