In Response to Re: You're Too Old To Drive- Get off the roads!: I totally agree, So many elderly continue to drive when they know they are impaired or on many medications that impare them. I have several customers where I work that walk with walkers, cannot see and are very shaky that I watch go out and drive away! Scary! I know my family will advise me and I certainy hope I will be intelligent and sharp enough to appreciate their guidence. I know it's hard to give up your fredom but do we really want to put others in danger? There should be testing EVERY year after a certain age and a mandatory drug certificate from your Dr. stating what meds you're on and if he deems it safe for you to drive. In Response to You're Too Old To Drive- Get off the roads!: if you are really unable to drive safely, because your reaction time is too slow, or you just can not hear well enough to be aware of oncoming vehicles, then, you should have someone else drive for you. But, doesn't it seem that there are some simple things that could be changed to make it easier for older drivers? for example, why are the sirens set to high sounds, when elderly people have the most trouble hearing high sounds, but , most can still hear lower frequency sounds just fine. Are you still driving, but, not sure if you are still safe?? Are you able to hear lower sounds, but, not high pitched ones?? How can you tell when you should stop driving altogether?? Posted by BettyCM When I turned 16, me and my parents talked about me wanting to drive an automobile. The cars that were built around the 1920s were stick shift, no power steering and no seatbelts. Today's cars have more safety features onboard compaired to back then. The Mercedes-Benz Smart Car is well designed for people with visual impairments. The windshield wipers toss the rain water off both sides of the car while the windshield wiper in the back runs from the top. My reaction time has never straightened up. So for me, I have to rely on the bus and Call-a-Ride. When it comes to gaining access to the light rail platform, I sometimes have to get to it by elevator. |
