Share Medicare dos and don’ts, including eligibility and supplemental insurance.
We must contact our representatives and the President at whitehouse.gov and tell them we will not accept such cuts to our healthcare. If these cuts are approved, we will have to pay an estimate

We must contact our representatives and the President at whitehouse.gov and tell them we will not accept such cuts to our healthcare. If these cuts are approved, we will have to pay an estimated $3,000 more per year for healthcare. Our struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans cannot afford to fall any further behind.
The Republicans in Congress are holding our struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans hostage in their so called fiscal cliff negotiations. Where is the fairness and compassion for those already struggling ?

Yahoo (AP) Washingotn 12/20/2012:  Medicare premiums could rise for many retirees

Seems like there is a lot of bi-partisan agreement on this one.

If those Medicare beneficiaries who are gonna have to pay more determine that it is no longer a good value especially in "B" , then there could be more of a hike on those remaining under coverage, no matter their income.  Remember these are the folks that could possibly pay their own way.  So our legislator should weigh what outcome (reaction) they get from such measures.

And guess what, Med "B" is not the part of the program that is in the worse shape financially but it is the one that takes 75% of the cost out of the General Fund.

We still don't have a solution to the Medicare Part A problem and it is the one that is in the worse shape financially.  This is the part that comes from the payroll tax contributions that all of us have paid into and current workers are doing like wise , although not fully (working benefits in lieu of wages).  Why should this Medicare A be in such dire straights when benefits in lieu of wages is NOT taxed at all for those that are still working - not on the employee side nor the employer.

Everybody can do their part here too with this Medicare A financial problem since one of the big cost areas in this part of the program is in "end of life" care.  This is something that each of us can do for no or little cost - have a living will in place especially so that whomever is responsible for you at this stage of life will know what you want.  We don't have to have legislation or a law in place to do what is responsible in this case -

Gail, its easy to say everyone can do their part when your well off. Most seniors are not in the same financial position that you are in.  Asking our struggling seniors, disabled and Veterans to do with even less, is morally wrong. How can you expect those struggling seniors to pay thousands more for healthcare with Republican Boehner's $1 Trillion dollars in Medicare cuts? Its time those who support these cuts, put themselves in our struggling senior's shoes ! Response to Re: Republican Speaker Boehner Wants To Cut $1 Trillion From Our Medicare & Medicaid:

I would have thought you would have liked the idea.   The President does, Democrats do,  some (many)  Republicans do too. BI-PARTISANSHIP.

Do you think Medicare should just become a program for those who are in financial need?

Per the AP News article:

"Income-based premiums were introduced for outpatient care under former President George W. Bush and later expanded to the prescription benefit, or Medicare Part D, by Obama's health care law. The idea now is to keep broadening their reach.

How would it work?

Think of it as two bites.

First, the current income-based premiums would be ratcheted up. Those surcharges are assessed on a sliding scale, and kick in for individual beneficiaries making more than $85,000, or $170,000 for couples.

Second, the number of beneficiaries who have to pay higher monthly premiums would be gradually expanded by a few hundred thousand people each year. That would be done by extending a temporary freeze on the income thresholds at which the higher premiums are assessed.

Without adjusting the thresholds for inflation, the share of beneficiaries on the hook for higher premiums would keep growing from 5 percent currently until it reached 25 percent, or 1 in 4 people with Medicare.

Backers of the idea — Obama administration officials, prominent Republicans in the House and Senate and nonpartisan experts — say it's foolish for Medicare to keep subsidizing people who can pay their own way, particularly when the program faces long-range financial problems."
